Ruth Hinkle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2025.
Ruth Caroline Hinkle (Becvar), age 92, passed away peacefully September 9, 2025 at home in California. She was born June 1, 1933, to Lois and Felix (Mike) Becvar in Colo, Iowa.

Raised on the family farm, she graduated from Colo High School in 1951 and took a job with the FBI, moving to Washington, D.C., along with her cousin Fern Harrison. While in Washington she met and married Darold (Lou) Harris, a sailor stationed nearby. Over the next years they were moved to Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia and Key West, Florida as the Navy transferred Lou. During that time, they had two children and eventually settled in San Diego County for a more permanent station. She worked her way up into top clerical positions for the Navy at the former Naval base Ream Field in Imperial Beach, CA.

In 1970 she married Philip Eugene Hinkle. Ruth spent tireless hours helping build and maintain Appliance Delivery until 1977 when they sold their business and semi-retired to become full-time RVers. They stopped their travels for a few years to settle in Bloomington, Indiana when Phil's uncle fell ill and needed help with his family business, Hinkle's Hamburgers. While there, Ruth worked for Indiana University's School of Music. After a move to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where Ruth worked for Danaher Tools and befriended local Amish farmers, they returned to full-time RV travelers. Ruth loved flying, gardening, playing the piano and journaling her travels throughout the United States, always sharing her experiences with family. When Phil became ill, they settled in Hemet, CA to be close to family.

Ruth is survived by her children Jim Harris (Donna) and Jean Lyall (Jeff), her grandchildren Blake Warren (Liz), Whitney Warren, Dustin Harris, and great grandchildren Abigail Warren, Rachel Warren, and Joanna Warren. She is also survived by siblings Audre Carlson, Eileen Klonglan, and Stan Becvar (Carol).

She is preceded in death by her husband Phillip Hinkle, her parents, and siblings Robert Becvar, Joanne Hartwig, Harold Becvar, Dwight Becvar, Wilma Alfrey, Ron Becvar, and Dorothy Becvar.

A private interment will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, California.
