Ruth McArdle Obituary

Published by Venice Gondolier Sun on Oct. 28, 2017.
Ruth Landis McArdle, longtime resident of Venice, Florida, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Sept. 30, 2017.

Ruth was born November 16, 1924, in Dayton, Indiana. After graduating from high school, she attended Ball State University where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music. It was while working at the family restaurant that she met her eventual husband of 60 years, Frank Joseph McArdle. They were married in Louisville, Kentucky, on Feb. 15, 1947. Ruth and Joe settled in State College, Pennsylvania, where Ruth began a 24-year career as a high school health and physical education teacher. She raised four children: Janice, Rick, Jerry, and Jim. Following their retirement, Ruth and Joe traveled extensively around the country in their motor home before settling in Venice. Ruth continued to pursue her lifelong love of music and the performing arts. She served as organist at Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and was a founding member of the North Port Orchestra. She was instrumental in establishment of the North Port Performing Arts Center.

She is survived by her four children; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and scores of loving family members and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph; as well as her two sisters, Jeanette and Pauline; and her brother, Byron.

Interment was held at Lady of Lourdes Memorial Garden.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers or other remembrances, contributions be made in Ruth's honor to Tidewell Hospice of Venic

On behalf of the North Port Symphony, I wish to pass along our deepest, heartfelt condolences and offer up prayers of comfort to the family of Ruth McArtle. Though many of the current musicians on our roster were not fortunate enough to have met her personally, we recognize the contributions that she provided to the arts community in the City of North Port. We know that it would not have been possible, had it not been for her passionate efforts, and we are truly grateful for her drive, and the determination that she possessed to help build a home for the performings arts in North Port, FL and we are all grateful to play our role in continuing her legacy.

With Warmest Regards,
John Loukota, Jr.,
President, North Port Symphony
