SHIER, Ruth Jean 1913 - 2005 Ruth Shier passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 13, 2005 after a full life of 92 years filled with love, caring and devotion. Ruth had great love for her large extended "united nations" family which spans four generations. She will be lovingly remembered by her six children and their families; Edna (George Smith, San Diego), Ralph (Prince George), Maxine (Dieter Guth, White Rock), Bruce (Helga, Cochrane), Clara (Tom McQuown, Woodbridge, Va), Delson (Fay, Edmonton). She was the proud matriarch of twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by brother Bill Bird (White Rock), who will sadly miss his little sister, and sisters-in-law Clara Shier (Toronto) and Mary Shier (London, Ont). She was predeceased by her loving husband Alvin in 1986 and older brother John Bird (Winnipeg) in 1971. Ruth was born to mother Jane and father William Bird on January 21, 1913 in North Bay, Ontario and received schooling in Fort William (Thunder Bay) before relocating to Edmonton in 1928. She is a founding member of St. Andrew's United Church, was active in the Home and School Association, always a willing community participant and proudly remembered her work in the employee canteens at the CNIB and Post Office. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital, Spruce Meadows Unit, for providing such a wonderful home of compassionate love and care during the final five years of her life. Friends are invited to join the family in a visitation to be held Thursday, August 18, 2005 between 7:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. at Howard & McBride Westlawn Chapel, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at the Westlawn Chapel, on Friday, August 19 at 10:00 A.M., the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Wilfong-Pritchard officiating, interment to follow in Westlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Howard & McBride Westlawn Chapel 484-5500
