Ruthie Fletcher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2025.
Ruthie Lee Vercher Fletcher, 84, of Boyce, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 4, 2025 at One Life Church, 6250 Coliseum Blvd., Alexandria, LA with Pastors Josh McElwee, Nathan Martin, and Lane Fletcher officiating. Burial will be at Campbell Creek Cemetery, Sharp. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Fletcher, Preston Fletcher, Colton Fletcher, Donnie Bolton, David DeSoto, Ricky Merchant, and Sherwin Fletcher.

Ruth was born on July 12th, 1940, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, the beloved only child of Ayward and Addie Vercher. She grew up in Pineville and attended Pineville High School.

In 1958, a chance meeting during a "Paul Jones" at the Old Barn Dance introduced Ruth to the love of her life, Jerome Fletcher. Four years later, on June 2, 1962, they were married and began building their life together.

Ruth graduated from Pineville High School in 1959 and then attended and graduated from Alexandria Business College in 1960. She began her career in accounting at Liberty Loan in Pineville, then later worked in the business office at Central State Hospital. She left Central as she and Jerome pursued several business ventures, including co-owning Boyce Superette and Uncle Albert's Fried Chicken. She later returned to Central State Hospital, retiring from the medical records department in 2000.

While successful in her career, Ruth's true calling was found in nurturing and loving her family. Being a caregiver was at the core of who she was. She was a devoted wife to Jerome, an amazing mother to her children, Marty and Janet, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a steadfast caregiver to her parents as they aged. Ruth was a woman of faith, strength, and boundless compassion. Her selflessness was a testament to the deep love she had for her family and friends, and the deep love she had for the Lord. She loved her children unconditionally and protected them fiercely. She was the true embodiment of a Proverbs 31 woman. Ruth and Jerome's 62-year marriage was a true testament to love and a shining example of a Godly marriage to their children, grandchildren, and everyone who knew them.

Ruth loved music and she loved to dance. Even after dementia had taken so much from her, while Jerome sang and played his guitar, she could be found sitting nearby, still clapping her hands and tapping her foot.

Ruth was a cherished member of One Life Church in Alexandria.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Ayward Vercher and Addie Thomisee Vercher.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 62 years, Jerome E. Fletcher of Boyce; son, Marty Fletcher and wife Jennifer of Boyce; daughter Janet Walters and husband Rick of Alexandria; four grandchildren, Kevin Fletcher and wife Jaelen, Preston Fletcher and wife Summer, Lacee Walters, and Elizabeth Walters; three step-grandchildren, Kaelynn Silver, Hannah Silver, and Aliceah Silver; three great-grandchildren, Sophia Fletcher, Colton Fletcher, and Lila Grace Mitchell, with a fourth great-grandchild on the way.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Fall Creek of Louisiana, Robbie Dauzat, Director.

Ruthie as I knew her was my eldest sister, Lorena Cobb's, best friend. We were next door neighbors till Ruthie married and moved with Jerome to Colfax. Lorena didn't drive so contact was hard. Lorena & her husband visited them after her marriage. I remember Ruthie's laughter & smile. I especially remember what a good friend she was. I have my sister's pictures of them as teens doing what teens do, acting goofy. Pin curls & all.
