A message for Chizu, Ronn and all of Dr. Shiono's family. I am a friend of Chizu's since freshman year at Penn. Through Chizu I have come to know her family and met each one of them at her wedding. The Shiono family is a wonderful family and truly Dr. Shiono was a role model and inspiration for the family. Chizu spoke so fondly of her father and his brilliance and his humor. May his memory continue to inspire and warm the hearts of his family forever.

As you all gathered together today with relatives and friends, we hope there was peace in your hearts and love for each other. We are sorry to be so far away from this gathering today, but please know that our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with you, even as you were with us a year ago.

Peace be with you~

Just a month ago at the Japanese Nationality Room meeting, I remember carrying Dr. Shiono's plate at the sushi bar. We will all miss him greatly. Unfortunately, we can not be there Saturday as we are out of town until Sunday.

My friendship with Dr. Shiono began some 45 years ago. It was low key but steady. We collaborated on creating the Japanese Nationality Room and, more recently, he endowed a Scholarship for Summer Study in Asia in his wife's and his name. Even though Dr. Shiono was a man of few words, I understood that we held each other in mutual respect, trust and affection. I shall miss him very much.
