RYONOSUKE SHIONO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 13 to Dec. 15, 2012.
SHIONO RYONOSUKE
Ryonosuke Shiono, 89, Professor Emeritus, University of Pittsburgh, died on December 11, 2012 at his home in O'Hara Township. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Teruko (Utagawa) Shiono; two brothers, Taro Shiono and Kikuo Ikeda in Japan; three children, Chizu (Ronn Beck), Masako (Hyun-Soo Lee), and Ryoichi (Erin); six grandchildren, Megumi, Jaeho, and Kenjiro Lee, and Delaney, Tate, and Brock Shiono; and three nieces. A graduate of Konan Elementary and Konan High School, Dr. Shiono earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry and D.Sc. in physics from Osaka Imperial University (now Osaka University). He received a Fulbright Scholarship and was awarded a British Consul Fellowship for post-doctoral work at the University of Leeds in England. In 1956, he accepted an invitation from the University of Pittsburgh to join the faculty of the newly-created Department of Crystallography. Dr. Shiono, an early pioneer in crystallographic computing, was active in the American Crystallographic Association and the International Union of Crystallography until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Shiono and his wife were early leaders in Pittsburgh's Japanese community, helping to establish the Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh and serving on the boards of the Asian American Heritage Month Committee of the Federal Executive Board and Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania. They were instrumental in the creation of the Japanese Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh and endowed the Dr. Ryonosuke and Teruko Shiono Summer Travel Scholarship for student research in Asia. In recognition of his effort to promote Japanese culture in the U.S., Dr. Shiono was nominated for the Emperor of Japan's Medal. He also appeared in several movies filmed in Pittsburgh, notably Lorenzo's Oil, Gung Ho, and the PBS special, Between Two Cultures: Japan in America. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Dr. Shiono to: "The University of Pittsburgh," (Ryonosuke and Teruko Shiono Summer Travel Scholarship), Office of Institutional Advancement, 128 N. Craig Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15260 or online at: www.giveto.pitt.edu. You may also donate to a fund of your choice in memory of Dr. Shiono. Friends will be received on Saturday, December 15, 1:00-3:00 p.m., at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street in Pittsburgh.

A message for Chizu, Ronn and all of Dr. Shiono's family. I am a friend of Chizu's since freshman year at Penn. Through Chizu I have come to know her family and met each one of them at her wedding. The Shiono family is a wonderful family and truly Dr. Shiono was a role model and inspiration for the family. Chizu spoke so fondly of her father and his brilliance and his humor. May his memory continue to inspire and warm the hearts of his family forever.
With love and prayers,

As you all gathered together today with relatives and friends, we hope there was peace in your hearts and love for each other. We are sorry to be so far away from this gathering today, but please know that our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with you, even as you were with us a year ago.

Peace be with you~

Just a month ago at the Japanese Nationality Room meeting, I remember carrying Dr. Shiono's plate at the sushi bar. We will all miss him greatly. Unfortunately, we can not be there Saturday as we are out of town until Sunday.

My friendship with Dr. Shiono began some 45 years ago. It was low key but steady. We collaborated on creating the Japanese Nationality Room and, more recently, he endowed a Scholarship for Summer Study in Asia in his wife's and his name. Even though Dr. Shiono was a man of few words, I understood that we held each other in mutual respect, trust and affection. I shall miss him very much.
