GREENSBORO — Sallie Ann Barham Nolan, 62, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at home.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Mayodan Moravian Church with The Rt. Rev. Dr. Graham H. Rights and The Rev. Tim Byerly officiating.
Sallie was born August 4, 1948, in Asheboro, to Ottis Rutley Barham, Sr., and Mary Frances Alberty Barham. She grew up in Mayodan and was graduated from the Madison-Mayodan High School. She was a lifelong member of the Mayodan Moravian Church. She was graduated from Salem College where she won the President's Prize in English. Later, she attended the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and subsequently worked in Washington, D.C., with the public affairs office of the Department of Treasury and later with the Office of the Press Secretary at the White House.
When she returned to Chapel Hill, she met and married Clyde Nolan, Jr., MD, on June 8, 1974. They moved to Lexington, KY, where Sallie worked at the University Medical Center and enjoyed her love of horses. Later, they moved to Charlottesville, VA, where Sallie served as a docent at the Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia and continued her love of horses.
After moving to Greensboro, Sallie was a writer for John Harden Associates, a public relations firm. In 1982, she became part-owner and manager of Morehead Galleries in Forum VI. She later went to work for the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and was instrumental in bringing the orchestra to Rockingham County Schools. She also edited the first edition of the Symphony Guild's cookbook, BRAVO. Sallie enjoyed studying landscape and country house architecture at Oxford University in 1986, and was a founding member of the Greensboro Branch of the English-Speaking Union serving as a delegate to the World Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1986.
Sallie was a long time board member of the Greensboro Opera Company, serving as president in 1988. She served as production chair for the 2003 production of Lucia di Lammermoor. Between 1992 and 1995, Sallie and her husband served as state chairs of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Sallie was a member of the Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine Alliance and was involved with the Health Education Foundation serving as Chair for two terms.
More recently, Sallie served on the board of the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation in Raleigh. She was a member and past president of the Contemporary Book Club in Greensboro.
Despite being visually impaired for over 20 years and having severe health problems from juvenile diabetes, Sallie Ann enjoyed life to its fullest and never found her impairment as a handicap nor let it keep her from enjoying the beautiful things that surrounded her. She was an inspiration to many that knew and loved her.
Sallie was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Clyde Nolan, Jr., MD, brother Ottis Rutley Barham, Jr., (Ed) and wife Susan; sister Sue Barham Moore and husband, Don; nieces, Mary Elizabeth Moore McLean (Dalton); Lindsay Barham Moore Morris (John); Emily Wilson Moore McClure (Arch); Caroline Frances Barham, and Sarah Lillian Barham; and uncle, Damon Conrad Alberty.
The family would like to thank her special caregivers and friends, Diane Prince, Cheryl Graves, and Patricia Maine and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
