Sally Lee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2024.
Sally Bland Cox Lee was born in Alexandria VA in 1931 where she attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from the University of North Carolina and was a lifelong Tarheels fan. She met her husband in 1956 and shortly thereafter moved to Orlando FL for business reasons but fell in love with the lifestyle and community of central Florida. There she raised her four children Sally Bland Lee, Sydney Smith Lee, III (Erica Holder), Evelyn Meade Lee Griswold (John Griswold) and Susanna Custis Lee Campbell (Adam Campbell) Her husband suddenly passed away when Sally was 42 years old. As a single mom, she stressed family ties and education and was a role model in how she handled her new reality with grace, always putting family first. She became interested in genealogy and delighted in finding new cousins and visiting old cemeteries. She joined numerous genealogy societies including the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Colonial Dames, where she was a Golden Dame, being a member for over 50 years. She moved back to Alexandria, VA in 2009 to be closer to her grandchildren. Before dementia took away from her all she cherished and enjoyed, she loved attending swim and track meets, Grandparent Days and numerous birthday parties. She also loved traveling with her sister, friends and later in life, her daughters. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Sydney Smith Lee, Jr. (1973) and her stepdaughter Carolyn Craig Wathey-Lee (2021) and survived by her four children, her two sons-in-law, her daughter-in-law and four grandchildren.

Great memories of Sally! She opened her door to me and brought me on their family vacations at NSB every summer! She was like a 2nd Mom and always there. We all looked up to her and she lead by example always putting her family first. I loved her breakfast and especially scrapple! Wonderful memories with Susanna in her home, spent alot of time there. Thank you Sally for always being there for us and kind. She put on the most elegant engagement party for me , my husband and Mom . We will miss you Big Sally.

She and my Mom were very close and she was always good to Gerrie. I remember traveling and staying together for swim meets. Sally and my Mom would play cards while we rested between prelims and finals. I remember waking one time to them laughing and playing cards!
