Sally Van Doren Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 3 to Jan. 6, 2013.
PharmD Sally Van Doren, loved by many and admired by even more, died unexpectedly on December 19, in Cuzco, Peru. Sally had recently learned of a serious medical condition and wished to see Machu Picchu before she became too ill to travel. She spent her last day on earth there and sent back pictures from the site- smiling, with Machu Picchu in the background. Anyone familiar with Sally's energy and life force cannot be fully surprised by the moxie of her striking out on her own in a hastily scheduled trip to Peru.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland to Charles and Betty Nuessle, Sally completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland and then returned to the University to complete her doctorate in Pharmacy. She moved to California in the late 1980s. Following her residency at the University of California San Francisco, Sally began her postgraduate career in the field of medical affairs and pharmacovigilance at Syntex (Palo Alto). Eager to see the world outside of the United States, she accepted a three-year assignment leading development of pharmacy protocols and teaching at a major medical center in Saudi Arabia. She returned to San Francisco and began work at Gilead Sciences (Foster City, CA). After a decade at Gilead, Sally worked in clinical safety and monitoring at several smaller companies in the Bay Area. In 2007, she made the decision to open a consulting business in pharmacovigilance. That decision quickly led to the formation of her company, BioSoteria, Inc (named after Soteria, the Greek spirit to preserve safety and keep from harm).
Under her leadership, BioSoteria (Emeryville, CA) established a reputation as an exceptional source for reporting of safety and adverse events in large and small companies across the country and indeed throughout the world. In 2011, BioSoteria became part of the Dohmen Company (Milwaukee, WI). As part of Dohmen, Sally remained president of BioSoteria and continued to insist on excellence in the company's service to biotechnical and pharmacological clients. Not one to forego the notion of "giving back," Sally served proudly as a community advisory board member on the Alliance Health Project (San Francisco) and the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (Baltimore). Sally also established the Doris McCaig (her aunt) endowment fund at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy to help needy students with their tuition.
As is often the case with accomplished leaders, there was Sally's professional countenance and, away from work, her personal one. Whether professional or personal, few who knew Sally for any period of time will soon forget her amazing wit, her easy smile, her ceaseless sense of curiosity about the world, and, most importantly, her generosity to those around her. Though her death comes as a shock to us, her quiet establishment of a foundation dedicated to support for at-risk teens should come as no surprise at all. That is just who she was and how she got about in the world.
In accordance with her wishes, Sally will be cremated in San Francisco. A celebration of her life is currently being planned for January 26. For details, please send email correspondence to [email protected].

Sally, you were one of my first friends when I moved to SF in 1989. I was moved by your wit, warmth, and humility. Just tonight, I learned of your passing after realizing that I had not heard from you in a very long time. Though I am crushed that we never will reconnect in this realm, I will treasure knowing you.

Dear Sally-
I have a friend (Adele Ruggles) who used to work at Syntex with you and I in the Medical Services Dept. She wants to return to the pharmaceutical field after being in nursing for a long time. I thought of you as a possible contact for her and decided to look you up. I was absolutely stunned and sad to see that you have left us. You were a wonderful person and it was a pleasure having you as my supervisor during my employment at Syntex in the late 80's. You left quite a legacy in the pharmaceutical world that will benefit many.
Sincerely,
Monica Schefski

Dear Sally,
It had been a long time that our paths crossed since Syntex days...what a great surprise to work with you again on a project in 2011! Sad that you're not with us now but know that you left inspiration and passion everywhere you went. Thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and colleagues through this transition. Peace Be Still!

Dear Sally,
I cherish the time we worked together at Peninsula Pharmaceuticals. We had our lunches where we discussed everything under the sun. I came to regard you more of a friend than a colleague and mentor. You were an amazing and unique individual with a love for life. I only wish I could have had lunch with you in recent years. Rest in peace dear Sally. I hope your family finds comfort at this difficult time.

Dear Sally,

You were one in a million. You were always nice to everyone you worked with. At Gilead, you treated everyone with respect, you never looked down or talked down to anyone. I always admired you. May your soul rest in peace, and may God grant your loved ones the strength to bear your loss.

Sally you filled my heart with so much love and joy.

I was fortunate to meet Sally in 1993 when we were both employed in the Middle East at a tertiary care hospital.
Both as working colleague and great friend, Sally was the best. And I was incredibly fortunate that our friendship continued long after our Middle-Eastern sojourn ended.
I have never in my life met a more kind and caring, more generous and more loving person than Sally Van Doren. It was great fun, and quite often hilarious, to spend time with Sally. Yet at the same time she had this uncanny brilliance to remind one of what is truly important. Sally is my role model for true unconditional friendship.
I will miss Sally's warm bright smile and contagious laugh, her sharp and intuitive levity and her constant wonderment of the world and its cultures.
But, Sally, I will always remember you and can only hope that a little of you rubbed off on us.

I was so saddened to hear the news. For the years that I worked at Gilead, she was "Sally Upstairs" while I was "Sally Downstairs". I dare say that there wasn't a person she met that didn't feel immediately comfortable with Sally, like you had known her for years. I am truly blessed to have known her: to be one who joined her and the group in "liver rounds", who squeezed too many people in a SF taxi to leave the restaurant for Beach Blanket, with Sally telling the cabbie, "Take all of us and I will make it worth your while", to have heard her speak in calm and friendly tones, to have shared warm embraces and enjoyed her laughter and smiles. God bless you, Sal. You will be truly missed but never forgotten. "Downstairs Sal"

I knew and worked with Sally during our years in Saudi Arabia. She was such a beam of light and fun, and I so respected and admired her professionally. I've followed your accomplishments throughout the years since then, Sally, and still so admire you! I will miss you.

Words can't express the huge void you have left in our hearts. I felt so privileged for having had the opportunity of knowing you both as a colleague and as a friend. You're a very special lady who will always hold a very special place in my heart, and although our time was cut short, I will hold those memories close. I found this quote by Irving Berlin, “The song is ended, but the melody lingers on..." Your legacy shall continue for years to come!
