Capolino, Salvatore "Sal" G. -- Of Plymouth, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the South Shore hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73.
Born and raised in Formia and Rome, Italy, he was the son of the late Alberto and Oresta (Rossi) Capolino.
Sal immigrated to the U.S with his family when he was 16 years old and they settled in Somerville. When he came to the U.S., he tried out for the Somerville High Football team and became an all-star kicker as well as a GBL champion. Prior to playing football in the US, he was a passionate soccer player for teams in Italy as a young boy. Shortly after graduating high school, Sal married the love his life, Anne, and they started their family. He was a diligent, hard worker who worked his way up from the mailroom to IT and programming department manager. In his down time, you could find him tending to his beautiful garden or woodworking. He made each of his children an exact replica of their own homes. Family was the most important thing to Sal, especially when he became "Papa" to his grandchildren whom he adored. Nothing made him smile more than his grandchildren. Sal was a one of a kind man who will be missed by all who loved him.
He was the beloved husband of 50 years to Anne M. (Lydon) Capolino. Devoted father of Tina Smith and her husband Judd of Reading, Gregory Capolino of Denver, CO, Matthew Capolino and his wife Cher of Wareham, Stephanie Rodrigues and her husband Daniel of New Bedford, and Michael Capolino of Plymouth. Loving grandfather of Donovan, Alexis and Gabriel Smith, Emily Capolino, Sofia and Isabelle Rodrigues. Cherished brother of Luigi "Gino" Capolino of Hyannis, Francesco "Franco" Capolino and his late wife Hanne of Medford, Evelina Ottaviano and her husband Ralph of Templeton, Maria Garcia and her husband Manuel of Medford and the late Antonio Capolino and his late wife Licia of Latina, Italy. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Calling Hours will be held Wednesday morning, May 17th in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House) Somerville, from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Clement Church 64 Warner St., Somerville at 11:30AM.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Services will conclude with burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sal's name to St. Jude Childrens Research Center

Sal, my old buddy. So sad to hear of your passing and that we haven't seen each other in 50+ years. I'll always remember the days & nights on the corner at Trum field and the bus stop. Watching you kick at SHS football games and your humor, grace and integrity. When I write the script about those days, I'll be sure to include you. Goodbye old friend and rest in peace.
