Waterford - Salvatore Ippolito, 89, of Waterford entered eternal life on Feb. 7, 2008, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 28, 1918, in New York City, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Forelli) Ippolito.

He graduated from Hebrew Technical Institute in New York City. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in June of 1941, and served in the 5th Armored Division under General Patton. He served in the African-Middle Eastern Campaigns, Normandy, Europe and Central Europe, the Ardennes-Alsace and Rhineland Campaigns, and he received the Purple Heart and many other decorations and citations. At the rank of sergeant he was honorably discharged in Oct. of 1945.

He returned to his home and married the former Carmela "Millie" Colagioia on Oct. 30, 1954, in St. Joan of Arc Church in the Bronx.

For many years he co-owned and operated an auto body repair shop in the Bronx before moving to Waterford 26 years ago.

Mr. Ippolito was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. He was a devoted husband and loving father. Mr. Ippolito was an avid fisherman, fishing saltwater or freshwater throughout Southeastern Connecticut and the shoreline. He enjoyed gardening in his yard and building model airplanes.

Besides his wife of 53 years of marriage, he is survived by three sons, Richard and David Ippolito, both of Waterford, and Peter and his wife, Christine Ippolito, of New Jersey; three loving grandchildren, Stephen, Allison, and Lauren; and a brother, Jerry Ippolito of Long Island, N.Y.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Philip, and Rudy Ippolito; two sisters, Virginia Begnoche and Rose Monti.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. this afternoon at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. on Monday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment with military honor will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.

Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
