Sam Meiner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 8 to Jan. 10, 2021.
Eleanor Meiner regretfully announces that her beloved husband, Sam, passed away Wednesday, January 6, of heart failure. Known to his friends as The Big Pig, Sam founded the Orlando favorite, Bubbalou's Bodacious Bar-B-Que Restaurant and Catering Company. He was born to Charles and Marian Meiner on December 26,1951. He is survived by his wife Eleanor and her three children David, Rachel and Sara; his brother Edward; sisters Meredith and Maryanne. Cousins Michael Winn, Sherry Van der Heym, Joy Williams, Mary Stevens and Suzanne Ackley.

He attended Dommerich Elementary, Maitland Junior High and Winter Park High School and Sam earned his law degree from University of Florida. He practiced real estate law, but his love of the restaurant business, learned from his uncle Mack, inspired him to open his chain of Bubbalou's Bodacious Bar-B-Que Restaurants. Olde timers will remember Meiners Pit Bar-B-Que in Fairvilla and Mack Meiners Country Store and Restaurant on North Mills Avenue.

Sam's passion for the ocean and marine life was acquired over the years of fishing, crabbing, boating and diving in Mosquito Lagoon near his family's historic vacation home, El Dora, at the Canaveral National Seashore in New Smyrna Beach.

Sam met the love of his life, Eleanor, on a life-changing helicopter ride to a meeting of the Chaine des Rotisseurs food and wine society, in New Smyrna Beach. They just celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary.

Since then, they have generously donated their time and food to several causes in Central Florida including the Orlando Philharmonic, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and volunteered to serve free Thanksgiving dinners to the volunteers of The Salvation Army. Together they formed a charitable organization called The Easter Bunny Foundation. Police throughout the country dress in bunny suits every Easter and give toy stuffed bunnies to hospitalized children.

In lieu of flowers, Eleanor invites you to consider donating to The Easter Bunny Foundation or your favorite charity in Sam's name.

There will be a celebration of Sam's life at a future date.

Big Pig ! You are missed so very much by so many in our family. As I run the river hunting the redfish, I think of better times with you and Miss Eleanor fishing with me. Yes, I use live bait now on many occasions because I know you loved to use it. Until we meet again, tight lines and best fishes my friend.

I'm still so sad. I miss Sam. He was just lovely. I will always miss him, and will think of him as long as I'm still here. Just such a shame we lived so far apart. x. Graham.

I knew Sam since he had hair to his shoulders and worked with his dad as an atty. I was an auto dealer he formed my first corp and became and stayed my friend for all these yrs. He passed way too young. His work as the Easter Bunny with children in the hospital was amazing. He was not only called the Easter Bunny he was called the PIG by his friends. He had the best BAR B Que in central Fl. Im thinking of you on this Easter 2022. God Bless Eleanor!

Eleanor, I was gob smacked when I heard of Sam's passing. I adored him for years, prior to adoring the both of you, as a couple. With you - he found the true love of his life and your influence made him a happier and more serene person. I tried in every way I knew to reach you but that bloody virus always seemed to present a roadblock. I hope you will eventually see this message and I sincerely hope find the info to his celebration of life. Please know that my adoration for Sam (and you) will always live in my heart. Geeze, I can barely wait to give you an enormous hug. One in which I may have to be careful so as not to fracture any of your ribs. Sending you positive thoughts and an abundance of love !!! Always, Meems

I was lucky enough to work with Sam when he had an office on Wall Street, in the 80's. He and his daddy, Charles and brother, Edward, taught me so much about real estate, paralegal work and so much more. I worked with him when he opened his first Bubbalou's on Lee Road. Getting free Bubbalou's food is still my favourite perk, ever! I was also working with him when he opened The Courtyard at Lake Lucerne. I remember when Sam met Eleanor and how much he loved and respected her. I learned so much from Sam and his family. Knowledge that helped to build the career I have today. Sam's generosity in sharing his expertise and passion has stayed with me and set an excellent example of how a leader should treat people. May God grant your loved one's the courage, strength and dignity to carry on without you. Thank you for everything, Sam.

Although we haven´t visited our Florida family in 30 years we are saddened to learn of Sam´s passing. We have fond memories of our last visit when my mother Lib and father Gus (both now deceased) were alive and Sam proudly introduced us to his bbq Bubbalou business. Although separated by miles we distant cousins share your family´s loss.

Condolences to the family. I never "knew" Sam personally, but witnessed his Easter Bunny persona a couple times--we bought our Easter ham from Bubbalous many times -but i certainly enjoyed his food for over 27 years, Bubblaous being the very first restaurant I ate in when my family moved to Winter Park in 1993. Over the years I took many people from all over the world to Bubbalous to give them a taste of real Florida - people from South Africa, Australia, Korea, Canada and England. When the second restaurant opened on Kirkman Road -near my office - I was able to eat their almost every week (usually on Fridays) and order catering several times a year for a large staff of barbecue devotees. through food and charity Sam touched my heart. He was one of my heroes.

Eleanor, Diane and I were so saddened to hear the passing of The Big Pig. Sam was so much fun and of course very unpredictable. Such a generous and happy person, always going out to help everyone. There will never be another Sam, and we were proud to know and love him.
You two made such a great couple, "Beauty and the Beast"!
We love you and will be here if you need anything!

Dear Mrs. Meiner,
I was saddened by the news of Mr. Meiner´s passing. I consider both of you as part of my extended family after all the years I have known you from the pharmacy. I will miss seeing you both come in and visit and share stories about giving back to the community. He would always offer me those candy peanuts. He was such an amazing person with such a good soul. I wish I could have had a chance to speak with him one last time. I was lucky to have known him. Take care and if you need anything, I´m at the Conway location. Please call me.

I met Sam in 1975 when he was at U of F Law with wife Marjorie. In the following 45 years he never changed much. The 1975 model carefree lad retained his passion for every new day and stayed game for participating in the next adventure. I spoke about my friendship with Sam at the weekly Winter Park Rotary with focus on lessons he taught by example. Sam's guidance to me worth keeping in mind: say "yes" to life and love.

I'm am saddened to hear this news. I started working for him at 18 at his law firm, Meiner & Meiner and enjoyed many years there. He taught me so much and he treated me always like family. When Rex and I got married in 1985, we helped out so much with our wedding. He had a generous heart and was kind to so many. What a beautiful loving soul he was and now he is with his dad, Charles. The two of them had a great relationship and did so many projects together. Hopefully they can help our world even more from above. Rest in Peace my sweet friend, Sam.

I remember meeting Sam at the San Juan Hotel when I moved to Orlando in 1976. He was wearing a Haggar 3 piece suit and practicing law. This was December 1976 and we immediately became dear friends. So many fond memories - barefooting on Lake Virginia - meeting Sam on Lee Road to discuss his concept for Bubbalou's - the Easter Bunny Foundation (my twin daughters were his first visit with Sam dressed in the Easter Bunny Costume and Eleanor in her beautiful flowing Easter dress) - the marriage to the love of his life Eleanor. The world has lost a special person. Sam helped so many people over his lifetime. He will be missed. I will cherish all the wonderful memories. Love ya Sammy

What a tremendous loss for you Eleanor as well as for all of us who knew and loved him. All through my early school years, he was seated behind me entertaining me with his quick wit, humor and many charms because we both shared last names beginning with M. Our parents were good friends and we all enjoyed beach time together in New Smyrna. I'm sure he will be missed by all who knew him, but he is sure to remain in all of our hearts and memories for eternity.
