Sam Mills Obituary
Mills, who was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine in August 2003 but continued to coach Carolina's linebackers between chemotherapy treatments, died at his home.
"Sam was one of the finest people you will ever meet. You would never know that he was a player who made Pro Bowls and had all this attention because he treated everybody the same no matter who they were," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. "He never had a bad thing to say about anybody and had a great ability to laugh at himself.
"He was the type of guy you want your kids to grow up to be."
A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Mills spent the final three seasons of his 12-year NFL career with the Panthers, beginning with their inaugural season in 1995.
There is a statue of him outside Bank of America and he is the only player in the team's Hall of Honor. Mike McCormack, Carolina's first team president, is the only other inductee in the Hall.
Mills spent his first nine NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints, following three seasons in the United States Football League. He finished his career with 1,319 tackles while starting 173 of 181 games and is also in the Saints Hall of Fame.
He joined the Panthers' coaching staff upon his retirement.
Mills was an undersized linebacker out of Montclair (N.J.) State who tried -- and failed several times -- to catch on with NFL and Canadian Football League teams. He gave progessional football one last shot when the USFL debuted in 1983.
Every day, Stars coach Jim Mora asked his assistants who the best player on the field was. Every day, they told him "Sam Mills."
"I don't need a 5-9 linebacker," Mora kept saying.
Mills ended up as one of Mora's favorite players and when Mora went to the Saints after the USFL's demise, he brought Mills with him.

I was watching the Grambling vs Southern game on tv and saw that Grambling had a running back named Frank Warren and it made be think of the late great Saints' Frank Warren and then the late great Sam Mills who I had the pleasure of playing with for 9 of my 11 years in the NFL, on two different teams that won the NFC West championship. Sam was MORE than a great football player but a GREAT father, husband, man, and friend. I miss him, Dave Waymer, Frank Warren, Tony Elliott, Steve Trapilo, and Craig Heyward, whose son is also playing today for Ohio State. All great guys and I miss them all. Rest in peace "SHAMMY!"

I was lucky to meet Sam as a teenager at Premier Atheltic Club during the lockout in 1987. He graciously spent a few minutes talking to me when I could barely muster words. It's hard to believe he's gone. He was an amazing athlete but his character shadowed anything he did on the field. He is sorely missed. Our world needs more men like him.

Sam, you've inspired so many people in our high school. You've showed us that even though you were an "undersize" linebacker, anyone can make it. I go to the same high school you went to when you were in high school (Long Branch High School). I have your Panthers Jersey, and i'm about to get your Saints jersey. When ever I see your retiered high school jersey on our gym wall it makes me stride to be the best that I can be, and that even though I don't go to one of the most recodnized high schools, I can still make it as long as I don't give up. Ive read about Sam and his many astounding feats as both a player and human being. Im an aspiring young linebacker, whos a bit undersized you could say just like Sam. Im 5,8 about 165lbs. I love football and am a huge New Orleans Saints and Sam Mills fan. I wear number 51 in his memory and as a constant reminder that a huge heart and can do attitude can make up for a lack of size in a sport that demands it. As a kid, I didn't know much about football. However, I would watch the Saint's games and I understood the entire game by watching him play. When my favorite player joined the Panthers in 1995, I was the happiest kid in the Carolinas. Mr. Mills has been an inspiration to me, even after his passing. As a Charlotte native and a tried & true Panthers fan, I recalled his strength and character in Dec 05 when I was diagnosed with brain cancer. Now, in between chemo treatments, I "play" at my best. I met Sam at Montclair State. While I never made the first team, I practiced against Sam and he always picked you up after he knocked you down. Whether you were on the first team or the scout team Sam treated each player the same. We'll miss him.

Was a role model for all fans. Not to many people know but, Sam was second in the state Brancher wrestling. i saw him in two pro bowls while living in Hawaii. Me and my brother held up a banner for him at Aloha stadium saying long Brach salutes Sam Mills. He looked up and saww it and we were both proud. He never knew who did this. The cameras showed it on national TV.

Sam was a great coach and even better person. He had the unique ability to relate to everyone, whether an old friend or new acquaintance, and make them feel like they were the only person in the room.

I still want you to know that you are still in my heart. Mike McInnis, myself and my sister Sheryl still talk about the nice times we had on Lindbergh. We all were like brothers and sisters. And I will always look up to you. My prayers are always there for your family. God Bless!

I always say we are only here for a
fleeting moment, but memories last forever. I still cry when I think of you, but as I wipe away the tears I smile and say I once knew a boy named Sam Mills and we use to walk home from school together and he always wanted to play football.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the entire Mills family. I went to high school with Sam and we knew at that time he was someone very special. I have been living in New York for the past 12 years, so I did not know of his illness until after his passing so needless to say I was very shocked and sad to hear such awful news. It is such an untimely loss, but God is in control and He has all the answers to things that we may never understand. Sam was always polite and very friendly and grew to be a determined and hardworking professional athelete and family man. We were all very proud of his accomplishments. My heart goes out to his entire family. May God continue to bless you.
