Sam B. Jr.
Sam B. Nadler Jr. died Thursday, February 4, 2016, after a long illness. He was born June 3, 1939 in New Orleans, LA and went to Loomis Academy (high school) in Windsor Locks, CT; Tulane University in New Orleans and received a PhD in mathematics from the University of Georgia. His field of research centered around topology and hyperspaces. He wrote the first text and research monograph in the field of hyperspaces of sets. He taught at several universities in the United States and Canada, was an invited speaker at numerous conferences and had a worldwide reputation. He always said how fortunate he was to be able to work in a field that he loved so much. In addition to his mathematics, he was passionate about playing the piano. He learned to play classical music from his mother and boogie woogie from Fats Pichon in New Orleans. He played professionally in the French Quarter for four years. His other great passion was duplicate bridge, and he recently achieved the status of Silver Life Master.
Sam is survived by Elsa G. Nadler, his wife of 53 years; his children, Sarah Nadler Fleisher of Moneta, VA, William R. Nadler of Rome, Italy, David K. Nadler of Jackson, OH; and two grandchildren, Madison and Zackery Nadler of Jackson, OH.
He touched many lives in his sojourn on earth and will be missed. A brief shiva service will be held at the family home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. As published in The Blade

Though I did not know Prof. Nadler personally, I admired his highly original contributions in topology and in particular fixed point theory. My condolences to the bereaved members of his family and his colleagues in the mathematics department

I am very sorry about your loss and I want to send my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to all the Nadler family.

Let me just add that I had a special relation with Sam. He helped me develop professionally, both as a mathematician, always pushing me to think deeply about simple things, and as a teacher. I and my students really appreciated his active participation and his insights in the seminar on dynamical systems I have been running. I always admired his positive outlook on life and his energy, especially when he was involved in fighting off the many injustices that plague our world.

I will greatly miss him, but he will always be in my thoughts as a shining example of professional integrity and accomplishment and a model of human warmth, wisdom and wittiness.

Goodbye Sam, your friend Alessandro.

It was a great privilege to have had Dr. Sam B. Nadler Jr. as my first mathematics professor at the University of Toledo. His instruction was an inspiration for me to pursue a graduate degree in Mathematics. He was a mentor to me over the following years and was very helpful in preparing me for graduate school in addition to helping me find a good school at which to study. Since hearing of his passing, I have been very reflective of the good influence he was on me and have been taking to heart all of his advice more than ever. He is missed by every student of his I knew and by many faculty members here at Auburn. May he rest in peace, and may he live on through his work, his students, and his family!

I had the honor to know Sam as I worked in the WVU Mathematics Library. He had an imposing reputation but as I got to know him I found him to be a bit of a teddy bear. :) I would say he was a passionate man when it came to issues he felt should be dealt with and made better. He always strove to do what he thought was best in his classes and at his university. I loved his compassion and drive...his vitality for his "mistress"...mathematics. Sam will be missed but I'm so thankful I got to be a blip on his radar of life. I pray that your family will have peace of mind knowing that Sam will be quite busy discussing mathematics and puffing on his pipe with thoughtful reflection with all those geniuses who passed before him. May God give you peace in the days ahead.

Sam was my undergraduate mentor at WVU. He enticed me into mathematics and guided my undergraduate development. He was very generous with his time and support. Sam actively groomed me for graduate school. He is the reason that I am a mathematician. Sam was very supportive of all of the mathematics students at WVU, and his uncompromising goal was always that we receive a first-class education. Rest in peace Sam. I was reading in your dimension theory book this morning before I heard of your passing. May you remain with us in spirit.

I am hurt of Sam's passing and wish that I saw him one more time before his passing. Sam was a very special person. He helped people against injustice despite their religion, nationality or race. He was generous especially with his time, pleasant and knowledgeable. My family and I are lucky to have known Sam and his family. He helped us greatly and we will never forget him. There are few people with such a big heart. May he rest in peace wishing his family the best.

Sam was my doctoral advisor at WVU. He was very generous with his time for both me and my family. To borrow a bridge analogy, his devotion to his students was only trumped by his devotion to the discipline of mathematics. It is indeed a sad time for both the world of mathematics and the world of academic integrity.

Sam,
Just want to tell you that WVU is now ranked as an R1-university (defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education), one of only 115 among the nation's more than 4,000 higher education institutions. And our mathematics department is also listed in the national top list.
You must be very proud of this news since you were one of a few who have committed their lives to our university and our department.
You and your life-time contribution will always be remembered by your colleagues, students.
