Sammy Mann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2010.
Sammy Glenn Mann, age 44, of Muscle Shoals, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Helen Keller Hospital.
Sam was a certified computerized mapper for the Colbert County Revenue Commissioner's Office in Tuscumbia for 18 years. He loved traveling, a cappella music and spending time with his family.
Born in Hardin County, Tenn., Sam graduated from Coffee High School in 1983 and the University of North Alabama in 1989.
Sam was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the Alabama National Guard. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1985 and served in Operation Desert Storm. After having served with the Naval Reserve for 15 years, Sam enlisted with the 115th Signal Battalion, of the National Guard, in 2000 and served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Mosul, Iraq, and Q-West, Iraq.
Sam will be remembered for his friendliness, his love of laughter, his dedication to God and country and his deep love for his family.
He was a member of Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals, where he faithfully served as a deacon. He also loved working with the teenagers and offering them encouragement in their walk with Christ.
Sam's church family was a huge part of his life. He looked forward to being among his Christian brothers and sisters each week - shaking hands, giving hugs and simply doing his part to show Christ's love.
Sam was preceded in death by his father, Billy Ray Mann; his paternal grandparents, J.D. "Sam" and Nona Mae Mann; and his maternal grandparents, Paul and Myrtle Montgomery; and a special great-aunt, Zula Oliver.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cayron; son, Samuel Cameron; mother, Faye Mann, of Florence; brother, Paul Mann, of Tuscumbia; aunt, Alice Turner, of Austin, Texas; nieces, Jessica Mann, of Florence, Ellen and Emma Davenport, of Muscle Shoals, and Aunell Davenport, of Willington, Del.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Gene Hooper, Michael South, Matt Wright, Danny Edgeworth, Joel Kendrick, Nick Berryman, Bradley Puckett and Jon Phillips.
Honorary pallbearers will be his co-workers at the Colbert County Revenue Commissioner's Office and a very special young friend from church, Hudson Kendrick.
Visitation with family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Colbert Memorial Chapel, Highway 43, Tuscumbia. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, lying in state 2-3 p.m., at Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals, with Larry Davenport and John McMath officiating.
Because of his love and duty to his country, Sam will be buried with full military honors at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to one of the following: the Highland Park Youth Group at Highland Park Church of Christ, Mars Hill Bible School or Heritage Christian University.
Colbert Memorial Chapel of the Shoals will be directing.

Cayron, you and Cameron and still on my mind, in my heart and in my prayers every day. I can't express how deeply sorry I am. If there is ever anything I can do for you, it would be my pleasure to do it. It is obvious that you have so many great friends and family that you will be greatly supported during this time of grief.

Mrs. Mann and Cameron,

I'm very, very sorry to have heard of your great loss of Sammy. I'm also sorry for the unwanted and unwelcome changes you both face in the days to come. God's best to you both as you move forward. As for Sammy, I remember his big, jovial spirit. He did love to laugh! He lite up a room and put smiles on faces and merriment in hearts.

Cayron, Cameron, Faye and Paul, Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time in your lives. Sam is going to be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. I have known Sam most of my life from Jackson Heights Church of Christ. Sam and my Dad would cut up and carry on with each other all the time. Heaven now has two more angels to watch over us all. Just remember all the good times you had together and cherish them always and it will get you through this difficult time.
You are in our thoughts and prayers,

Scott and Georgeanna Echols Rickard and family.

Cayron & Cameron,
It was my distinct pleasure to live across from you for going on 13 years. We've never had finer neighbors. We always knew,(and sometimes did), we could call on you a ride to church or to borrow an egg. It makes my heart hurt now to look across the road and to know that Sam is no longer with us in this life.
Cameron-- I remember the day your dad went to get you at the hospital, I was outside and he came over to tell me the news. He said "I've got to get back in just a minute to leave" then talked on for another 30-40 minutes. I've never seen another human so excited. You were the light of his life and I know that you'll honor his memory by becoming the fine young man he was raising you to be.
Cayron-- I know your heart will forever have an empty space because there will never be another like Sam.
My God grant you both the strength, grace and mercy to survive this horrific loss. You are in my heart and prayers...

Cayron and Cameron and to all of Sam's family: I am so saddened by your loss and will keep you all in my prayers. I was in C Company with Sammy and was in Iraq with him. While at FT Campbell we grew close. I was his "barber". Sammy was one of those persons that you knew you liked him the first minute you met him! He had a sharp wit and great sense of humor and enough optomism to encourage the whole unit when we were discouraged. I think it was the Saturday Morning before we deployed, Sammy had taken a busload of us to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. When we started back he jokingly said "Let's just head home. We could be there before anyone missed us and an Article 15 split 15 ways wouldn't be that much." We all got a laugh out of that. I am a much better person for having known Sammy. The world was a better place when he was in it, but I thank God that Sammy was a Christian and I'll get to see him again.

Sammy had the brighest smile every time I saw him at the courthouse. He was a fine young man, and what a blessing to his wife, son, mom and other family members. His service to our country so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today is so admirable. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The Mann family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sammy was my battle buddy in Iraq. He made life so much easier while I was there. He is a great friend, I will miss him more than anyone will ever know. But knowing Sammy, heaven has a surprise coming to them. I know now when it rains, it will be from Sammy keeping all the other angels laughing so much they will be crying. I know his family will be missing a big part of their life. I'm sorry for their loss.
