Samuel Robert Armstrong

Armstrong, Samuel Robert, Jr., son of Thomas Luttrell Armstrong and Edith Edington Armstrong, was born February 27, 1927, and died June 22, 2012. He grew up in Fountain City, and upon graduation from Central High School enlisted in the United States Army during the waning months of World War Two and completed a tour of duty with the 6th Mechanized Cavalry in Germany. Returning home, he he graduted from the University of Tennessee and then served once more in the United States Army in Korea with the 3rd Infantry Division, 822nd Heavy Tank Battalion, where he was awarded a Bronze Star. Bob worked for GMAC for thirty-seven years and was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder and was a member of numerous committees. He was most proud, however, of being known as the "biscuit man" when the men of the church prepared breakfast for special congregational events. Having pride in his Scotch-Irish ancestry, Bob participated in a leadership capacity in a number of heritage organizations including charter membership in the Scottish Society of Knoxville, the Armstrong Clan Society, the Scottish American Military Society, the Tarbolton Club, and was one of the early promoters of the Knoxville Pipes and Drums. For a number of years he was a team leader at The Refuge at the Volunteer Ministries Center, was a member of Leadership Knoxville, class of 1999, and received the Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service. He is survived by his wife, Anne Armstrong, step-daughter, Gina Kaeuper and husband Jonathan, son, Jeff Armstrong and wife Melissa, son, Sam Armstrong, daughter, Debby Armstrong, sister, Geneva Parry, and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:45 pm on 27th June, 2012 at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel 2300 W Adair Drive, followed by a graveside service at Lynnhurst Cemetery, Rev.
