Samuel Baxter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2025.
Samuel David Baxter, 69, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, in Sonora, California. Born on February 7, 1956, in San Francisco, California, Sam lived a life marked by devotion-to his family, his faith, and his work.

Sam pursued higher education with determination and purpose. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering from the University of Phoenix and went on to complete a Master's degree in Computer Information Systems from National University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career in technology and education.

He began his professional journey at Scientific Microsystems and SuperMac Technology before joining the ranks of Apple Computer and Hewlett Packard. Sam later transitioned into education, where he found deep fulfillment during his two-decade tenure as a Computer Training and Support Specialist with the Elk Grove Unified School District. His work there left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike.

Sam was deeply devoted to his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years Nicole; sons Steven, Wyatt, and Elijah; sister Mary Baxter; stepmother Elvira Franco Baxter; stepsister Nikki Franco; stepbrother Jonathan Franco; sisters-in-law Pat Bocook, Vonda DeOrian, and Cara Steffenhagen; brothers-in-law Bill Steffenhagen, Doug DeOrian, Jim Snyder and Chas Snyder; as well as numerous family members whom he loved "to the moon and back."

He was preceded in death by his father Samuel Davis Baxter and mother Nancy Baxter.

Outside of work and family life, Sam found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful connections. He cherished spending time with his wife and boys-whether working on projects in the garage, sharing unagi sushi, chicken adobo and berry pie, playing games and building forts, holding hands, or enjoying one-on-one moments together. He had a passion for outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, kayaking and fishing, as well as sports such as tennis and pickleball. A man of many interests, he also loved dogs, enjoyed square-dancing, bike riding, traveling to national parks, playing guitar, web design, watching movies, hosting a house full of family and friends, telling dad jokes, and meeting friends for coffee and pastry.

Sam's faith was central to his life. A devoted follower of Jesus who loved the Lord deeply, he found great joy in reading his Bible and participating in Bible studies with friends. His spiritual life was reflected in his gentle demeanor-soft spoken yet charismatic, forgiving and nonjudgmental nature-with an unforgettable smile that lit up every room he entered. He lived for deep meaning and quiet introspection, yet could unleash his playful side at the most unexpected moments! Always ready to lend a helping hand, Sam approached life with humility and gratitude.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire kindness, faithfulness, and love. A Celebration of Life will be held at 01:00 PM on May 31, 2025, at Hilltop Church of Sonora 412 W. Stockton Street. Reception immediately following at: 10565 Sunshine Hill Road, Sonora. He was and is my favorite uncle. I have so many moments...he used to fly me around my grandma's house as superman. He took me riding in the many sports cars he owned. He always made time for me ...no matter what. He even had his honeymoon with my Aunty Nicole on the Big Island and most whole heartedly took in my oldest son Elijah, when I fell short. And through it all..no judgment and still loved me. He was called to heaven toooo soon , but left behind so much wisdom, care , kindness and love. He will always be in our hearts and never forgotten.

I met Sam when we were both students at the College of Small Minds (CSM). We became fast friends - tennis matches by day and ping pong and cocktails by night. Fast forward and we each found ourselves as groomsmen in our respective weddings. I loved Sam - his sense of humor, his smile, and quick wit. But most importantly, I´ll miss his friendship. He will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Nicole and the family. - Tom Snowden

Where to begin...
Sam has been one of Joe's best friends since 3rd grade. I had the privilege of having Sam in my life when I started dating Joe. He was the best man at our wedding 41 years ago, and Joe was his best man when he married the love of his life, Nicole. The memories are endless.
Sam was soft-spoken, thoughtful, kind, and funny (I'm certain that many got to share in his "Bruce Lee" impression!). He continued to look in on Joe and myself after Joe's stroke. Always caring. Heaven has gained one of the kindest souls I have ever known.

Aloha everyone. My name is Jojo Baxter, i am Sammy´s younger cousin. I remember Sammy always caring for me when we were younger. We always had fun! We used to take their family dog "Namu" walking around the school yard across the street from their home in Colma. I remember Sammy would let me play with his remote control cars and me being a reckless kid i would play "Crash em up Derby" with them....Sammy would just sit there and have that look like wow, my cars are all messed up. I apologized to Sammy and he said don´t worry about it Jo, it´s just a toy i can get another one......So he bought another one and i never got to see his new car ever....I don´t blame Sammy haha, but these are some of my memories with Sammy. Sammy was always very thoughtful and very loving with all of our ohana. Sammy would always have that genuine handsome smile. He always had very cool things to talk about and always very outgoing with so much love. Sammy as my older cousin was very cool! I will never forget our time. I want to give my deepest condolences and prayers to everyone that Sammy has touched in our hearts. My deepest condolence to Nicole and the boys. May god comfort you and give you strength to heal. Give everyone a huge hug for me! Rest easy Kuya Sammy till we see each other again.

I first met Sam at Foulks Ranch. I remember our conversations about becoming parents. He was always so peaceful, positive, and patient when helping in the classroom. When I returned to Elk Grove Unified in 2014, I was pleased to see a familiar and friendly face when I joined the Franklin Elementary family. Again, Sam was always ready to help and he was patient with us as we worked through our frustrations at our new site and with the new technology. The last time I saw Sam, I was walking in the community and he was walking with his wife and we had a brief chat about retirement. He looked so happy. I am so sorry for your loss of such a wonderful person. Keeping your family in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Sam´s passing! He was such a kind man with gentle nature. We had many chats while he worked on one tech issue or another in my classroom at Franklin Elementary. I always enjoyed talking with him! We had many conversations about retirement because we were both getting ready to retire soon. I wish his family much peace as they grieve his loss.

Sam helped me through many tech issues at Franklin Elementary. Even though most of the problems were user caused, his kind nature and humor prevented me from feeling like an idiot. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I worked with Sam for many years at Franklin Elementary School. He helped teachers with all of their computer issues. He had the unenviable task of setting up our new school with new technology and it was not an easy job. He was so kind and had a lot of patience. Sam always came through for me when I needed him. I got to know him over the years and we had a lot of conversations about everything, from tech to our families and vacations. I was so happy for him when he retired. We love him dearly. My prayers are with his family during this devastating time.

I had the pleasure of working with Sam at Franklin Elementary in Elk Grove. He was always the most calm and gentle soul. There wasn't much that rattled him. We had great conversations about all things computers, but also life. I learned a lot from him and will cherish the memories I have. He will be greatly missed.

The Apple Test Engineering Team.

This was the last time the four of us got together. There were others on our team that advanced and went on different paths.
Sam was manager, mentor and friend. We both liked 007, tennis, Apple and movies.
There are a few people in our lives that make a BIG difference and I consider Sam one of them. What a beautiful spirit.

Sam was my manager at Apple back in 1997-1999. He was one of the kindest and gentlest people I know - we all have stories. Very sad to hear of his passing today - he had a huge influence on all who knew him.

Sam was a truly happy man every time I was in his company.
It was honor to have know Sam even if it was for a short time.

He was my only step-brother. I met him when I was nine years old. I was so happy to have another brother. Even though we had a 23 year age gap, I never noticed it because he was so easy to talk to. He always made me feel comfortable. He always tried to guide me on the right path when it came to my career. He was a very good older brother to me, very loving, caring, and funny. I will miss him deeply. It still hasn´t sunk in yet that he´s gone. Rest in paradise Sammy. Please give my biological dad, our dad, and Uncle Fred a huge hug from me and tell them I miss them so much. Until next time....
