WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Samuel E. Chappell, age 76, a native of Abingdon, died June 28, 2007, of cancer related pneumonia at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington. Dr. Chappell resided in Washington, for 45 years. He was born in Abingdon on April 18, 1931, to the late Paul E. Chappell and Mary Lou Chappell and attended school in Abingdon and Bristol Virginia. Mrs. Chappell,
I would like you to know how sorry I am at the passing of your husband. I'm a distant cousin of his from the Goode family in Abingdon. Sarah and I did quite a bit of research on our family history. I'm sorry to say that I only met Dr. Chappell once, and that was at Sarah's funeral. Through the years, however, I have always heard so many good things about him. My deepest condolences to you and your son.

Our deepest sympathy to you both during this heart wrenching time. Although things will not be the same from this day on, take comfort in knowing that Sam's spirit will live on. The thoughtfulness and kindness he shared will continue to flourish in the lives of those he touched.

May God's loving grace be with you both. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
