My condolences to the family of Admiral Gravely. I had the extreme pleasure of serving with Captain Gravely onboard the USS Jouett during the westpac cruise when he was selected as Admiral. He was the best skipper I ever served under. He will be missed.

To the Gravely family,

My deepest condolances, I served under the Admiral when he was Capt. of the USS Jouett. Due to my rate, I moved around and served under many officers. In the 30 years that have passed, I only remember the name of one, the best and most competent one, Samuel L. Gravely Jr.

To the Gravely family:

Thanks for sharing the Admiral with us. He paved the way for the African-American sailor. Even though I never had the pleasure to personally meet him, I read numerous accounts of the sacrifices that he made on our behalf. For that I will be indebted to him. Admiral, I salute you.

In 1965, CDR Gravely was the first African American Naval Officer I ever saw following my commissioning. He became a friend and mentor for the rest of my career, as he was to countless young officers and sailors. I had the great pleasure of being there in Newport when he was selected and promoted to Rear Admiral. He is truly my hero and inspiration. Our love and prayers to you, Mrs. Gravely and all the family.

Admiral Samuel Gravely was an inspiration to a generation of young Black U. S. Navy Sailors in the late 1950's. I especially admired and respected him for the way he carried himself and his total dedication to the United States Navy. He treated eveyone fairly. May he have fair winds and following seas.
