M.D., Samuel Rapport, 81 08/09/1927 05/03/2009 Dr. Samuel Rapport, 81, died May 3, 2009, at his home in Lake Oswego. A practitioner of general adult psychiatry, he worked in clinics, hospitals and universities and in private practice in Los Angeles; Long Beach, Calif.; and Richland, Wash. He was born Aug. 9, 1927, in Canton, Ohio, the son of Joe and Sarah Rapport of New Philadelphia, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in 1950 and his medical degree in 1954. His residency in psychiatry was at the renowned Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Stodola Rapport of Portland; five children and their spouses: Michael and Evie Rapport, of Lawrence, Kan.; Susan and Alan Brandt of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Amy Rapport and Lee Laiterman of Los Gatos, Calif.; Joseph and Ginger Rapport of Portland; and Janet Rapport and John Stein of Mill Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers; a sister; a sister-in-law; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Shaaray Torah Synagogue, Canton. Burial in New Philadelphia. A memorial service also will be held in Richland, Wash., at a later date. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made in Dr. Rapport's name to an organization that promotes human dignity.

I first met Dr. Rapport at LA County USC Medical Center and our paths crossed again 20 years later at Metropolitan State Hospital where I was working as a JCAHO/Licensing Coordinator. Being in that position, I could not ask for a better Medical Director to work with. His caring nature and desire to have the highest quality of care made my job easy. Dr. Rapport will be missed by all of those who suffer from mental illness. My prayers go out to his family, including Joe and Ginger and his wife Sherry who were always very kind to me and my family. We are all better people for knowing and working with this wonderful family.

I was a resident under supervision by Drs. Rapport and Mendel at USC La county Hospital in the 1960’s. It was a wonderful experience. Dr. Rapport was a knowledgeable and unique teacher and set a high example for care of severely disturbed patients. He was not afraid of tackling the worse and most troublesome cases. It was a privilege to be supervised by him my condolences to the family and the profession of psychiatry.
