Sam, We miss you so much. At a recent family gathering I was noticing there weren't enough children there. Then I remembered why. It hurts more than words can express. You are constantly in my thoughts and I can hardly believe it is true. Love you with all my heart. Grandmother

A Poem for Sam on his Birthday:

Sammy
You’ve never left our thoughts; you’re always on our mind
We love now more than ever since you’ve left this world behind.
I hope you know I think of you, no less than once a day
You’d still be here with all of us if I had my way.
I can’t believe its been a year, I still can picture your smile
Swimming at the Macs, we never found the outside lights,
but you boys made the night worth while.
You were a lady killer, never without your phone
All of those silly little girls just couldn’t leave you alone.
You are even more perfect now, no talent do you lack
But you’ve taken a piece of us with you, and we’ll never get it back.
I hope you know we loved you, you were such a stud and you know it’s true
I don’t know any other way to say it but boy WE LOVE YOU.
How is it up in heaven? Is the field always green?
I bet you’re a star up there as well, best player on the team.
I bet the refs are fair, not blind as they are down here
I miss watching you play, you always had no fear.
Do you look down and laugh at us, while you are up above?
How big are God’s arms that hold you, how embracing is his love?
Have you met Carol yet? See her lying by the pool?
What do you do all day in heaven, do you go to school?
Is it sunny all the time, or is Christmas white?
Is it always day time, or is there also night?
Sorry about all the questions, they just puzzle my mind,
Like why did God take you so early? You were truly one of a kind.
It will never be the same without you, you’ve left your mark behind.
We miss you more everyday, that’s what I’ve come to find.
I have one last request before I let you go,
Please watch over my brother Sam, tell him when to say no.
I can’t be there for him like I used to, I worry about him everyday
I wish he still had you, Sammy boy, to help him find his way.
You have my permission, so teach him to be the best he can
I know with you behind him, one day he will be an incredible man.
That, and Just hi, I miss you...I guess that’s what I really wanted to say
I miss you so much little boy, Happy 15th Birthday.

Dearest Shannons - Mark, Kathy, Thomas & Jessica, I woke up thinking of you and praying for you today...the anniversary of Sam's entrance into the world and into heaven. Wow, in 14 short years, he impacted more people than most of us will in a lifetime. God had a very special mark on Sam and I knew that the first time I met him...he was an extraordinary boy. My heart goes out to each of you as you strive to live your lives to the fullest, the way he did, only without him. Much love and continued prayers...Ginger

To the Shannon Family
It has taken me a year to write you a note of rememberance. We also had a loss of a young neice last fall. You may not know me, your boys first reffed my REC soccer games at Jenks, and were great. I just wanted you to know that I have often thought of the sadness you have experienced this past year and that I truely think of you often and know that your son had to have had such a special purpose in his young life to bring so many people together and to touch your lives. Between these two young losses, we now just cherish our time here and with our families.

Dear Shannon family,

My husband and I followed yours and Sam's story through my brother, Mike Keester, and were greatly moved by the courage and resiliency Sam showed, the strength and grace you demonstrated, and the marvelous and amazing spirit of community, loving, sharing and caring the Tulsa soccer community modeled. Our hearts broke with Sam's departure from this life into the next, and we wept for you in your sadness. Although there will never be the "right" words to lift your burden of sorrow, please know you all are in our hearts and prayers.

To the family and friends of Sam Shannon,

There are no words to express the complete devastation of when a child dies. I first saw Sam's story on an internet soccer message board. It touched me profoundly as my family had just experienced the sudden and tragic loss of our Stephen, 16 years old, in July. I do not know any of you, but we are all part of a larger community or "family" of youth soccer. Now we are of another family. Those who have lost a child.

Please know that there are those of us out here who care deeply about Sam, his brother, sister and his mom and dad and that we are thinking of you all as you find the courage to face each new day and begin the process of rebuilding your lives.

Sadly, I can truely say that I'm familiar with what you, Sam's family and friends, are going through. Please be kind to yourselves and reach out when you need to. Sam will always be with you. I'm so sorry.

I never met Sam, but can honestly say that I have grown to love him through my daughter Krista, and observing his strength and courage. Sam has impacted my life in ways I cannot describe. Mark, Kathy, Thomas, and Jessica,

We are the blessed ones who were able to share two years with Sam and all of you. Their are no words that can express the pain that you have gone through, but please know that we at Fellowship Bible Church have kept you and Sam in our prayers from day one. When we heard we never thought twice about Sam pulling out of this and getting back on the field. As a father I share your pain and say a prayer ever day for God to be with you. Sam will be missed,BUT he will not be forgotten. Thank you for sharing a little of Sam with us. Love, The Grosinsky

i remember the first time met sam.. i was guest playing for tsc and mark his dad was the coach,he was there along with thomas. i remember how he used to beat us everytime because he had so much talent that we could hardly keep up. and when he moved across the street from me i got to know him more and more. playing soccer with him out in the street.. teasing him about the girls he liked... or just watching the english premiere soccer league on TV at christmas. the thing i miss most about him is him walkin out of his house with that grin always on his face. i dont think i ever saw him without it. and i know that i cant wait to see him and play soccer again with him.. -meg #4

Maybe it was the fact they shared a bond as ‘little brothers’ to the 91’s, but I was always pleased with the way Sam was a good friend and role model for Blake. I know Blake really admired Sam, and it is gratifying as a parent to watch your child being influenced in such a positive way. We’re all better for the too-brief time we got to spend with Sam.

Words cannot express our feelings. However, I can say this... we are forever changed. All of us. Damon misses Sam and our team will never be the same but our boys have truly been touched by an Angel and are better people for knowing Sam. Thank you, Shannons, for the example and witness you have shown to our impressionable young men as this experience will stay with them forever. Mark, your words at Sam's home-going celebration were amazing! I left with a peace I cannot explain. We continue to pray for all of you each night and throughout our days. We love you.

I was moved by your story even though we have never met personally. I have two young boys who are very much involved in soccer. My oldest Jimmy 11 yrs. plays on a competitive Celtic 94 Green team. My oldest Jimmy was the first to bring to my attention what happened to these boys in Broken Arrow. It really moved me how sensitive my son felt about another soccer player he never known. God looked around his Garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.

He knew that you were struggling; he knew you were in pain.

And he knew that you would never get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting tough, and the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your tired eyes, and He whispered, "Peace be Thine".

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.

For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Mark, Kathy, Thomas, and Jessica: Sam is not only in Heaven, but locked deep in your hearts forever!

I feel so fortunate to have had Sam as part of our soccer family for the past five years ~ to experience his beautiful smile, and zest for life. I have some wonderful memories ~ what a blessing it was to know Sam.

Keep your faith and let Jesus be the Rock you lean on.

One of my favorite memories of Sam is of him hanging out with all the pretty girls. At every tournament and every game, there was Sam with a flock of girls nearby! He had the charm! Another was of him always wanting to help people. He was always playing with all the younger siblings. They thought of him as the Pied Piper. Wherever Sam was, there were the little kids. He has left more of a legacy in his 14 years than many leave in their lives. He has truly blessed us all with his love and compassion. He will live on in our hearts and I know he was truly touched by his dad's eulogy today as we all were. Thank you Mark and Kathy for bringing such a wonderful young man into our lives to make such a difference in us. His purpose on this earth was far reaching. Nancy Mankin

I met Sam briefly. He was a really sweet boy, and an amazing sweeper. It was unfair that he was taken from us too soon. I send my love and my prayers to him. He'll always be in my thoughts. I send my deepest condolences to his family, and I send love, hope, and faith to his teammates. Be strong guys. He's always with you.

God Bless

Love,

My younger brother Brandon "Meat" has played with Sam for about two years and whenever I would go to the games it seemed like Sam always had that great smile on his face. so many times he would change my day just with that smile. He will be missed but now he is with our Heavenly Father playing soccer with the Angels and watching us. God be with you.

As a family of busy soccer players, we grieve with you in the incredible loss of your young, talented son. The spirit and spunk with which he fought for his life has inspired us all. May God's very presence hover over you and comfort you at this difficult time and may your memories of Sam be warm and tender ones to charish forever. Know that someday you will all be united in a place of no tears and no sorrow and may we all live moment by moment more boldly and courageously until that day.
