Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 11 to Sep. 14, 2016.
Samuel Alexander Towne, Jr., 85, of Salisbury passed away on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House. Samuel was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 9, 1931 to the late Verna Steel Towne and the late Samuel A Towne, Sr. and lived in the Midwest until 1940. The family moved to Washington D.C. at that time. Mr. Towne attended DC and Maryland schools and graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in Maryland. He often said that marrying Betty (Elliott) Towne was the best thing he ever did. Before retirement, Samuel owned a contracting company working primarily with home builders. Mr. Towne was a Veteran of the US Army, serving seventeen months in Korea. He was awarded the Korea Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 327 in Faith. Samuel enjoyed gardening, hunting, music, reading, Tolman Pond, N.H., trips to the beach and most of all spending time with his family, especially those precious grandchildren. Along with another couple, Samuel and Betty made may short trips all over the East and South and spent many happy days at the beaches. Samuel was a member of the Shiloh Reformed Church of Faith for many years and enjoyed the fellowship there immensely. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Betty Towne; and family, Janet Drake (Doug, Melanie, Catherine and Tom, Samuel Towne III (Susan Saintsing), Samuel Towne IV (Alex), Logan and Jim Towne (Suzanne Powell), Haley, Jason and Olivia. Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, at Shiloh Reformed Church, 100 South Main Street, Faith, NC 28041. Celebration of Life: 12:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 16, at Shiloh Reformed Church with the Rev. Richard Myers officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC 28144. Military honors will be accorded by Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard. Memorials: Memorial contributions can be made to Shiloh Reformed Church 100 S. Main Street, Faith, NC 28041 or Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House 1229 Statesville Blvd. Salisbury, NC 28144. Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Towne family. Online condolences may be made at www.lyerlyfuneralhome.com.

I remember Sam fondly from when our family lived in Fairfax County, VA at the same time. He and my dad (George Bullock) were great friends. My prayers and sympathy for the Betty and the family!
