Sandra Carter Fletcher passed away peacefully at her home in
Mechanicsville, Virginia, on the morning of May 24, 2025. The Lord was with her, blessing her departure with peace, comfort, and tranquility.
Born on October 14, 1947, in Asheville, North Carolina, Sandi spent her formative years on the family farm in nearby Fletcher. She was the firstborn child of Dean and Juanita Carter and was later joined by her siblings Myron, Neil, and Selma. Growing up in a family that operated a small commercial farm-and later expanded into excavating and manufactured home sales-Sandi gained early insight into the values of hard work and entrepreneurship.
Sandi led an active and accomplished youth. She was deeply involved in the local 4H organization, where she earned numerous local and state awards. A highlight of her early achievements came in 1965 when she was named 4H's Annual National Health Queen at the National Convention in Chicago. This honor gave her the opportunity to meet several prominent individuals, including Senator Hubert Humphrey.
She graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville in 1965, where she played guard on the girls' basketball team. Her competitive spirit and athletic discipline carried over into college, where she continued playing basketball as a starting guard for the Ladies Varsity Team at Mars Hill College. In 1969, she earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics.
Following graduation, Sandi accepted a position as a Home Economist with The Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) in Richmond, Virginia. Later that same year, she married Kim Fletcher, and the couple relocated to Cleveland, Ohio.
Sandi's married life was marked by adventure and adaptability. Due to Kim's corporate career, they experienced eleven relocations over the years. Amidst these changes, Sandi remained a devoted mother to their son Mike and created a nurturing home wherever they lived.
In Cleveland, Sandi became a licensed realtor before transitioning into the health insurance industry while living in Atlanta. Initially hired for part-time support work at a local underwriting company, her talents quickly became evident. She rose to become a senior health insurance underwriter and was eventually invited to become part owner of a new underwriting firm-a testament to her professionalism and skill.
Throughout her life, Sandi prioritized supporting her son's growth and well-being. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly to any endeavor or individual that contributed positively to his life.
Later in life, one of Sandi's greatest joys came from being "Grand Ma" to her cherished granddaughters Samantha and Katie Fletcher. Time spent with them brought immense happiness and fulfillment.
The final years of Sandi's life were marked by significant health challenges that left her wheelchair-bound. Despite these hardships, she maintained her sense of humor and continued offering unwavering support to her husband of 55 years.
Sandi's enduring faith in Jesus Christ remains a source of comfort to those who loved her-a promise that they will one day be reunited.
She is survived by her husband Kim Fletcher; brothers Myron Carter and Neil Carter; sister Selma Carter Allen of North Augusta, SC; daughter-in-law Beth Derketsch Fletcher; and granddaughters Samantha and Katie Fletcher. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Michael K. Fletcher on May 19, 2019.
