Sandra Holguin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 15 to Oct. 16, 2009.
Holguin, Sandra Ann 1/11/66 a luminous being entered the world. Her name was Sandra Ann Holguin. Born to proud first time parents, Louie and Sally (and later with a little sister in tow), Sandra's life in Santa Ana was a collage of good home cooking, laughter with friends, good books, playing outside, and love from a large, extended family. She learned to appreciate the small blessings in life from her mom, while her dad taught her the importance of hard work. Excelling in school, Sandra was an honor student throughout St. Anne's Elementary, Mater Dei High School, and Cal State Fullerton. But her greatest achievement in these formative years was learning to appreciate life. This was most evident by the caliber of life-long friends she began to accumulate through neighbors, school mates, work, travel, and theatre experiences. It was no effort on her part. Beauty begets beauty, after all, and all were drawn to Sandra's beautiful light. As an adult, Sandra's authenticity shined above all else. Sandra followed her heart and moved to NY in '01, living the last 7 years in Brooklyn. She also found her heart when meeting her undeniable soul-mate, EJ. Together they uncovered a love that grew daily throughout the last 7 years of her life. With Sandra's inner light brighter than ever, new friendships developed right alongside the well established ones via EJ, work, theatre, travel, fellow seekers of good grub, her blog, MySpace, and facebook. Whether in person or by internet, all who encountered Sandra were enchanted by this one-of-a-kind lady. Sandra was a student of life, and we have much to learn from her. She was proud of her Mexican heritage, and regularly researched her familial roots (along with familial Mexican home cooking recipes). Sandra embraced and loved life in its purest, simplest form. She found beauty and joy where most never look, and lived each moment in the moment. When she spoke to someone it was as if you were the only two on earth. Each chotchkie she rescued was displayed with the respect of a priceless treasure. Each morsel of food she ate was savored as if it were her last. Emotive music, a good book, a favorite movie, sharing a hearty laugh, playing a satisfying game of boggle, a walk through the dog park, and of course a delicious hot meal would all be elements of a perfect day. During the week of 9/28/09, when Sandra's passing was imminent, the light and love she had so effortlessly spread throughout her life, came back to her. It cradled her and carried her through her transition, in many forms: her favorite music playing, her favorite books and poignant emails from family and friends being read aloud, and most of all, the loving physical presence of devoted friends and family at her bedside, holding her hand, and accompanying her on this final leg of her journey. A calm peaceful energy was palpable around her. At age 43, on 10/3/09 just before dawn, Sandra, the light of our lives, left this earth. But her luminous essence will live on inside each of us who were so very privileged to have been a part of her life: Sandra's proud parents, Louie and Sally; little 'seester' Deanna, brother-in-law Tom, Godson and niece Max and Maya; the love of Sandra's life, EJ; EJ's mother Hanna; many many loving Tias and Tios and cousins in her very large extended familia; and of course, her countless dear and devoted friends. Sandra was a wise old soul at a very young age. Giving back to friends and family, to those in need, to the earth, to this life she loved, was a pleasure and a privilege, never a burden. Sandra held a solid, sacred place in my soul. And she still does. She experienced a dream come true with me. A true dream come true!

Many people do not know this about me, but I was a professional actor and just as I started "taking off" I became ill. After a lifetime of performing, Sandra was the last actress that I ever worked with. She laughed and cried with me as we toured the West Coast. We were like two young newly-free birds who just left the next and entered the exciting magical world. We were free to do anything that we wanted, it was just us, as we traveled from town to town. We saw so many sub-cultures of our society. ..Beautiful, beautiful experience.

We danced alongside country roads; we played fun little psychic games; we stayed up late talking about our dreams, our pasts and our futures; we invigorated hundred of children at a time. It is an INCREDIBLE experience to be on stage with one other person, guiding and stimulating the creativity of masses of children. Thousands and thousands of children were made happier by Sandra.

I remember one performance where Sandra's passion and enlightenment leaped into the forefront of everyone. ... We were performing a show for a large elementary school in the San Jose area of California. It was a public school, though it seemed oddly strict like an uptight private school. In the middle of us laughing and interacting with the children, as were were unfolding our show for them, the principal came in and started shouting at us. Right there, in the middle of a live show!

The grumpy old crotchety principal, who was shouting so hard that spit slung form his lips, said that the children were not aloud to interact with us if it meant that they were going to be louder than a whisper. ..What? Was he seriously saying this to us, to all of us?

Every single child's face went from happy and glowing to damp and desperately disappointed. The crotchety old guy stormed out of the auditorium. Sandra and I stood in silent amazement that this just happened.

Our eyes met immediately, shocked. Like an internal switch from off to on, Sandra's face went from jaw-dropped and wide-eyed, to lip-pursed and squinty-eyed. Determination. Challenge. ...War! This was a war in an instant. It was the good guys:us. And the bad guys: The crotchety old wicked witch grumpy principal guy. --Yes, I know that he is only one guy, but his verbal attack had the impact of an army. ...So, it was on! Sandra and I quickly scuffled behind the set and we frantically whispered about what to do. Holding each other's hands, heads closely together. Sandra said "Let's do it! Let's give those kids the experience that they deserve!" "Ok, let's do it. Let's give them one day of happy freedom in the midst of this entire repressive year for them!"

So, we held our heads proudly and high as we walked like brides down an isle, determined but graceful steps. Out to the audience we went. Kids, still silent in shock. Sandra cautiously looked into my eyes and then turned passionately on again. Her arms raised above her head as her voice began to boom above them all. She walked into the audience, provoking the children to laugh and play with us. I too entered the audience and gripped the hands of the teachers on the sideline. We were going to get everyone involved. The adults knew what we were doing. But, nobody stopped us. I bet the adults were just as repressed as the children. We began a wave of fierce energy in the room. It flowed through us and into the audience, landing in the center of their souls. We were loud, oh yes, we were loud. We began dancing and singing and skipping. Laughter erupted from us all. It was powerful, and there suddenly was no war to win at all. It wasn’t even about war. It was about living fully within this gift of life. For that day, in that moment, we were living with vigor, dignity and good old fun!

I saw Sandra's face in that precious moment of our lives. She was free. And so was I. ..And so were all of those beautiful children in the audience. We knew that they would remember this day for the rest of their lives. They may not remember our names, and they may not remember the details, but they will forever be influenced by that feeling. They will remember that complete strangers cared about them enough to put themselves in the line of fire. We were nervous about it, but we knew that we could not just give in and let these children, or teachers, lose out on the experience of a lifetime. It was magical. Truly, magical.

...That was only one single example of Sandra's unbelievable strength and beauty. My god, how I loved her for that experience. I love her now for all of her life and how she spread such real love everywhere that she went.

I feel in my gut, in my soul, that Sandra has very important work of angels to share in spirit. She already did with every day that she was in body. Please, let us take her lead, and live our lives unafraid to spread laughter to strangers and love to all of the world.

LOVE LOVE LOVE, all around Sandra.. And to everyone else...

That was beautifully written and captured what I also perceived as the essence of Sandra. I hope the family is coping well and continues to feel the light of Sandra as described in her obituary. I among so many, am inspired and warmed by her spirit. I may not be present at the formal gatherings but, I'll be there in my thoughts. The day she passed away was a beautiful day for me. I woke up with the sun and surf and tracked the sunlight until it set on the horizon-an unusual occurrence for me. It was meaningful even before I learned about what happened that day. Even now I sometimes get a subtle and light "touch" which I perceive as Sandra. I hope that spirit stays with me and keeps directing my attention to the subtle details.-with love, Daniel

Dearest Sally, Louie, Deanna, and EJ,
A brilliant bright light shone in our midst and now a new star will continue to illuminate the heavens. Sandra was a beautiful young woman, who made those whose lives she touched, better for having known her. May she rest in peace. May you be comforted by knowing how much you meant to her.
