October 22, 1926 - September 27, 2022
Charlotte, North Carolina - Robert Hall Starnes died peacefully on September 27, 2022, at CMC Main in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mr. Starnes, known as "Bob" to business associates, mall-walking friends, and one set of great-grandchildren (Grandpa Bob) and "Hall" to family members, neighbors, and church family, was born on October 22, 1926, to William Reese Starnes and Mary McCall Starnes in Charlotte, on their wedding anniversary.
Hall attended Elizabeth School and Central High School in Charlotte. He earned a bachelor's degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He participated in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program (ASTRP) during World War II and earned college credits from Auburn University and the University of Alabama.
Hall married Virginia Esther Williams Starnes ("Jenny") on February 21, 1953, at First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. They met on a blind date, became engaged about a week later, and remained joyfully married for 57 years until Jenny died in 2010. This union produced three daughters and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob spent his professional career in the textiles and apparel industry, working for Crompton & Knowles and Leesona. He also held jobs while in high school and college with a car parts company and the postal service.
In his retirement years, Hall tutored children at Sharon Elementary School and for a time, coordinated the tutoring program associated with Sharon churches. He made meatloaf and homemade yeast rolls for the homeless as a part of Sharon Presbyterian's ministry. He also gave blood regularly and was a VIP blood donor even in his late 80s. In his 80s and 90s, he enjoyed walking at SouthPark Mall.
Hall was predeceased by his wife, his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Sybil Starnes, and his brothers-in-law Wade and Roy Williams. He is survived by his daughters, Becky (Elizabeth); Katy (Rick); Julie (Tim); his grandchildren, Sarah (Justin), Andy (Marissa), Janice (David), Walter, Sam (Lindsey), Hank; great-grandchildren, Cate, Smith, Eleanor, Caroline, Penelope, Lucy; and beloved nieces and nephews.
A service to remember and celebrate the life of Robert Hall Starnes will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 3 p.m., at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, North Carolina. Feel free to bring a memory (written or spoken) to share at the service.
