Santa Gavin Obituary
Santa T. Gavin, age 98 of KY, formerly of Merrillville, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016. She was born in Gary, IN on September 9, 1917 to parents, Liborio and Pauline Nuzzo. She was one of eleven children, and was the last surviving sibling. She married Robert Gavin on March 23, 1944. Robert preceded her in death on April 23, 1982. Survived by daughters: Kathy (John) Barako, Maggie (Jim) Jensen, Mary Ellen (Alan) Young, Ginny Gavin, Ruth (Vince) Lugo; sons: Martin (Kiki) Gavin, Robert (Yolanda) Gavin; daughter- in-law, Phyllis Gavin; grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer) Barako, Tom (Angela) Barako, Karen (David) Arndt, David (Becky) Jensen, Tim (Alyssa) Jensen, Matt (Molly) Jensen, Katherine Jensen, Beth (John David) Spencer, Megan (Craig) Henschen, Allison (Kyle) Martin, Melange and Melisande Gavin, Kellyn (Randy) Atkison, Danielle Gavin, Vanessa (Brett) Lowe, Michele (David) Van Skyock, Sean Lugo; step-grandson, Vince (Kelly) Lugo; great-grandchildren: Rose and Jack Barako, Isabelle, Kamryn, and Aubrey Barako, Amelia and Benjamin Arndt, Juliana and Felicity Jensen, Devlin Jensen, Emma, Ethan, and Easton Henschen, Tessa Martin, Juliette Lowe, Mason and Gavin Lugo, and one more on the way; sisters-in-law: Anna Anton, Betty Gavin; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Robert; daughter, Sister Patricia Gavin SSND; son, James Gavin; parents, Liborio and Pauline Nuzzo; brothers: George, John, Frank, Sam, and Benny; sisters: Jenny, Josephine, Stella, Elizabeth, and Vera; brothers-in-law: John Gavin, Patrick Gavin; sister-in-law, Virginia Mehok. Santa was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church before moving to live with her daughter, Kathy in Kentucky. She was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School, Class of 1934, and worked at US Steel until she married. Santa taught CCD at SS. Peter & Paul and worked in the school cafeteria. She was a member of Daughters of Isabella and Principessa Maria Di Piemonte Italian Society. Santa spent many busy years raising nine children and devoting her life to them. She was always willing to do whatever she could for her family and friends and will be missed forever. Family and friends may call at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 6360 Broadway, Merrillville on Friday, June 17, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. from Pruzin Brothers Chapel and 12:00 p.m. from SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5885 Harrison St., Merrillville, with Rev. Jon Plavcan officiating. At rest, SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery. Sorry to here this news. I still see her at lunch at Pete & Paul. Jimmy never did like that his mom was so near the principles office. I think of Jim and always smile. Peace to both of them.

Mary Ellen and family...Your parents were a major part of our (Marcotte) childhood. Your dad with Green hair on st. Patty's day, your Mom smiling and always gracious. My prayers are with you because no matter how old you are loosing your parent is very hard, but we were lucky to have them as long as we did. I am very sorry to learn of Santa's death. What a long and active life she lived! When I lived at SS. Peter and Paul she was always a vibrant part of the community, and very generous to us SSNDs. Her heart and home were always open. I marveled at the way she took such good care of her family, especially of Ginny. I am grateful for having known her, and am glad that she is now reunited with her loved ones who went before her. Be assured of my sympathy and prayers. Since I live in Green Bay I am not able to attend her funeral, but will pray with you on Saturday.
