Santos Batucal, also known as Sonny to his family and friends was born in Batac, Illocos Norte, Philippines on November 27, 1933 to Victorio and Toribia Batucal. He has two brothers Fermin and Gabriel, and one sister, Iday.
At the age of 20 Santos enlisted in the United States Navy. Santos first served as a Ship Serviceman, responsible for serving and providing for a ship’s higher-ranking officers. In his early years Santos was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet where he served on 3 aircraft carriers (USS Lake Champlain, USS Hornet, USS Ticonderoga) and deployed multiple times in support of US European Command. Santos was later assigned to the Pacific Fleet where he served as a Storekeeper, responsible for a ship’s supply and maintenance functions. While in the Pacific Fleet, Santos and his family moved to Japan. With his family in Sasebo, Santos supported multiple deployments, often 6 to 9 months at a time, in support of the Vietnam Campaign. Santos served for 20 years, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His awards and decorations include: Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4), Navy Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2) Vietnam Service Medal (3), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal, and Letter of Commendation from Seven Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral, and M.F. Weisner.
In 1956 Santos met the love of his life, Esperanza Yapo Rabanal and they were soon married on December 26, 1958. Together they raised 4 children: Elizabeth, Arthur, Dennis, and Beverly.
Santos is described by his friends and family as a hardworking, outspoken, and genuine character. For much of his adult life Santos committed himself to causes and organizations greater than himself. His years of loyalty and devotion have made him a prominent figure within the United States Navy, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the City of Carson. Above all else, Santos was a family man. Santos loved and provided for every single member of his family in any way he could. As the leader of his family, Santos organized annual trips so he can spend time with the ones he loved. Spending quality time with loved ones was undoubtedly Santos’s favorite pastime.
On Monday June 22, 2020 Santos passed away after months of fighting his failing health, he was 86. Santos is survived by his beloved wife Esperanza, his four children Elizabeth, Arthur, Dennis, and Beverly, and his three grandchildren Lauren, Jacob, and Noelle.

The Watch
For twenty years
This sailor has stood the watch
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch
Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world
This shipmate stood the watch
In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch
Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch
He stood the watch for twenty years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch
Today we are here to say
'Shipmate... the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Led
Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch..."
"Boatswain..Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore.."
Dad we "Got the Watch". Mom is in good hands. She has a fine crew watching her. So don't worry Dad.
LOVE YOU CHIEF!

A Poem by Tecumseh
So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.
Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people.
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.
Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”
~ Chief Tecumseh

Daddy ko ,
What I've been missing the most is seeing you and Mommy together . I always admired and loved when you two were together ❤ together. I have so many wonderful memories of you guys dancing and having a blast with your friends at the U.F.A.A., Anak Ti Batac, and the Fleet Reserve Association dinner dances. I didn't like it back then when you would force me to be a third wheel but I'm glad you made me because I will forever cherish those precious moments in my heart❣
Thank you for being such great examples for me. I've learned so many valuable lessons through you. You were such a classy couple, a dynamic duo, two hearts made of gold . I'm so blessed, privileged, and honored to be your daughter. So grateful to God for you both
Love always,
Bev (Bang-Bang)

Daddy ko ,
It's been really hard not having you here for your birthday or for the holidays ✝❄. The only thing I find comfort in, is knowing without the shadow of a doubt, that you are overwhelmed with joy and celebrating with Jesus everyday. I look forward for that day when we're all reunited again. Missing you always my Papa Bear

Dear Lolo Sonny & Family,
I wanted to express my deepest condolences further more as I was lost for words before but have been able to gather my thoughts clearly now. My heart was crushed when Tita (Mommy) Bev told me the news that you had gone to be with the Lord. I was devastated yet relieved because I knew you were having a hard time during your last days.
I was also in disbelief because it seemed like just yesterday that you were here while we all took turns taking care of you. Even under those unfortunate circumstances, I was blessed enough to get to know the wonderful man that you are. I am so grateful to Jesus we had that quality time together sharing laughs and eating your favorite fried chicken from Jollibee or McDonald's. I'll never forget that time Tita Bev and I snuck fried chicken for you in your room. You almost got caught by the nurse so you put the fried chicken back in the paper bag and threw it as far away from you. We were all trying so hard not to laugh!!
I will cherish all of our memories and your stories of your childhood, your family, your love story between you & Lola, and your adventures in the Navy. Thank you for your guidance, wisdom, and never ending love and support of me and our extended Batucal family here and in the USA . If it weren't for you and Lola Panching many of our family members wouldn't have the opportunities or the better life you helped provide for them today. As for my family, even though we're far away you never forgot as others did and offered help when we had no one else to turn to. You and Lola have hearts of gold and we are forever grateful for all of your help, generosity, and kindness, especially for my sisters. Lola, we truly appreciate all that you've done for our family as well.
Lolo, thank you for being an incredible, honorable, courageous, ambitious, respectable, and God-fearing man I aspire to become. You're an inspiration to me and hope to make you proud one day!! We are honored and grateful to be a part of your legacy. To the rest of my Batucal Family, my spirit mourns and my heart grieves with ALL of you during this sorrowful time. I hope you will find comfort in our prayers .
Lolo Sonny, within our short time together, has made a positive impact on my life and will always have a special place in my heart. I'm thankful for all the video chats between us since you've left Pinas and for
Mommy Bev keeping us updated with your health. It's been really hard for us here to let Lolo go but I know we will be reunited again in Heaven someday, until then I will miss you and I love you so much Lolo Sonny ✝
Always,
Bon-Bon

Thank you for all the wonderful memories Papa! We miss watching boxing with you, enjoying any kind of dessert your heart desires, and listening to Connie Francis on Alexa while you reminisce about how you coordinated Connie Francis' concerts at the various CPO clubs. We also thank you for your dedicated service for our country, America the Beautiful!
Our lives have forever changed and we're so grateful for the borrowed time God had blessed us with, with you. We take comfort in knowing you are now with Jesus, carefree, pain free, and worry free.
We'd also like to extend our great appreciation to ALL that prayed diligently for Papa when his health started to decline. Your fervent prayers avail much and we are so grateful for your intercession on behalf of Papa Sonny. Those of you both near and far who faithfully offered prayer our hearts are so thankful for you. May our good Lord Jesus be gracious to you, keep you, and richly bless you ALL!! WE LOVE YOU!! ✝

Dear Uncle Sonny ❤,
We still can't believe you are no longer with us. We are deeply hurt by this and miss you so much. Our deepest condolences to our bereaved Batucal Family. Uncle, you have been our saving grace for our family. You and Auntie were always there for us when we had no one to turn to and have helped us greatly many times.

You've never forgotten about us here even though others have. The memory of what an amazing Uncle you've been to us will live in our hearts forever.
We have been fortunate to have known you and blessed to have been able to spend quality time with you when you were here with us in 2018. We ALL love you, will greatly miss you, yet joyful that you are no longer suffering and in Heaven with Jesus & with our loved ones also. We're grateful to God for having an Uncle like you. Dear Uncle Sonny,
I was very sad and deeply hurt when I found out you were gone and have left Auntie Panching behind heartbroken. When you were here in the Philippines, back in 2018, we were so happy to see you again during your vacation until you fell ill for a month. I felt so bad for you but blessed to have been able to help you, Auntie Panching, and Bev in every way that I could so we can get you back home safely to your beloved family.
Uncle Sonny, thank you for always treating me with kindness. You would always look out for me and have the most generous and caring heart next to Auntie Panching. I will miss our talks, jokes, and sharing meals together. I miss and love you so much, Uncle Sonny, goodbye for now.
I would also like to send my heartfelt condolences to Auntie Panching, Liz, Art, Dennis, Bev, Lauren, Jacob, Noelle & the rest of the family. I mourn with you all my family and I am deeply hurt for your loss. Take care and God bless!!
Love always,

August 5, 2020
Papa Bear,
Since childhood you and Mama have always been accommodating and cared affectionately for the neighborhood kids, my classmates, acquaintances, distant relatives, friends, and even ex boyfriends. You treated them all as if they were your own by opening your home when one became homeless, inviting them to eat with us as a family, allowing them to sleep over because they were too drunk to drive home or offering them a safe place to stay for the night.
You were always willing to help others by hand or financially without expecting anything in return and put everyone else's needs before your own. You served our gracious God in the best way you knew how by being joyful, peaceful, kind, faithful, gentle, and loving to many by being PAPA to ALL.
Your legacy will live on through the lives you've impacted and touched. I am so proud and honored to be your daughter and no matter how old I am I will always be your little Bang Bang ❤
You've taught me how to love unconditionally, what it means to have integrity, good morals & character, to fight & never quit, work hard, dream big and to uphold an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.
I know I speak for the girls and Janice when I say this, you're a GOOD GOOD FATHER!! Well loved and missed by ALL. We thank you for your serving, loving, and humble heart ❤.
Rejoice with our beloved ones in your new painless body while worshipping and dancing with Jesus in Heaven. Love you forever Papa!!

My deepest sympathy for your loss
Brian Somera
July 31, 2020
Dear Auntie Espie, Batucal Families & Families of Uncle Santos Batucal,
My deepest sympathies to all of you. Me (Brian) & my sister Roxanne called him Uncle Santos, because he was like an Uncle to us. He did everything an Uncle does; he cared about us, he loved us, made time for us, making sure we were ok, and someone to talk to if we needed to talk to somebody. This is how we got to know the Batucal Family. Back in 1979, me (Brian), my sister Roxanne, & our dad Paul Somera moved to Annalee Avenue in Carson, to live with Uncle Joe & Auntie Connie Tabag, after we sold our house on Scobey Avenue in Carson. One day our dad Paul, me (Brian) , & Roxanne were outside in the front of the house, when we saw a girl riding a big wheel or bicycle & she past by in front of me & Roxanne. We both said "Hi" to her & she stopped & said "Hi" to us. We introduced ourselves as Brian & Roxanne Somera & said we are brother & sister. We asked her what her name is & she said it's Beverly Batucal. We asked her where her house is & she pointed to the house where she lives with her family. Me & Roxanne know knew that Beverly was our neighbor, because she lived just 2 houses away from Uncle Joe's house where me, my dad, & my sister now were living at. We became good friends with her. We ride our bicycles, big wheels, play board games, or just talk stories with her at her house. It's there that Beverly introduced me & Roxanne to her dad Mr.Batucal, her mom Mrs. Batucal, sister Elizabeth & 2 brothers Arthur & Dennis. Beverly said this is Brian & Roxanne our new new neighbors down the street. I went to Mr.Batucal and said Beverly told me your first name is Santos & her mom's first name is Espie. I asked him if I can call him Uncle Santos and Mrs. Batucal as Auntie Espie. He said yes & said he liked that alot. From that day, it's been Uncle Santos & Auntie Espie to me & Roxanne We introduced our dad, Paul to Beverly as our new neighbor & friend when she came to the house. As the years went by we remained close to the Batucals. Roxanne moved out got married & had a son, Aunt Connie died, then Uncle Joe died, I was the last person living in the house, before it was sold. I loved Uncle Santos. Love, Brian

Uncle Sonny,
I have many fond memories as a child growing up. There were many camping trips with the three families (Batucal’s, Mariano’s & Espiritu’s). From the thin pancakes to the Filipino spaghetti, it was always a fun time. The Casa Dominguez Filipino Association picnics and holiday events. As I grew older, I will always remember the family pool parties at the Anaheim Hills house. You would ask me to barbecue the fat “more crispy”. I’m grateful for both you and Auntie Espie’s blessing at my wedding. Although time has passed and our families have moved in various directions. You’ve always been close. I realize my appreciation for what is good in life is based only on my own experiences. I’m grateful that you've helped to create many them.

Our Sincerest Appreciation
Your fervent prayers whispered for us, the close proximity of your presence, phone calls, cards, flowers, delicious dishes, scrumptious banana bread, visits, and other gestures of love and concern will always remain monumental in our hearts. Each kind deed extended, makes real the promise of our Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks to ALL of the families and friends who offered prayers. We thank God for you and pray His choice blessing upon each of you.
With Love & Affection,
The Rabanal ~ Batucal Family

On behalf of the Rabanal family we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Auntie Pancing, Liz, Art, Dennis, and Bev. We mourn the loss of our dearest generous Uncle Sonny with you. He was always so genuinely caring, selfless, and kind. He treated us as if we were his own which made us feel extra special and truly loved.
I'm glad we were able to spend some quality time together in 2018 even though the majority of your time was spent in the hospital. You've always been an inspiration to me and my family and your memory will live on in our hearts. You're definitely one of a kind and it's been an honor to be your nephew thru Auntie Panching.
Our hearts are broken but we are happy you're no longer in pain and in heaven with Jesus. Rest well Uncle Sonny. We truly miss and love you. Thank you again for your wisdom, generosity, unconditional love, and kindness. All glory and honor to God!
