Sarah Andrus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2022.
Sarah Andrus

New York, NY — Sarah ("Sandy" "Moosey" "Puffin") Andrus, lover of language, long baths, birds, New York, Stern MBA, executive publisher, underappreciated humorist, and the writer/editor of our family has left us clueless as to how to communicate the announcement of her tragic passing at her home in New York, NY on Sunday, October 9, 2022. She was 36.

Sarah has also left us clueless as to how to make poppykosh at Thanksgiving, with who (or is it whom?) to tell puns and dumb jokes, what to do with funny photos of raccoons, and where to put googly eyes.

While Sarah feels inseparable from NYC, she grew up in Bow, NH with many of her current best friends. In Bow, she could be seen driving a red Jetta with at least one hubcap missing and where a perfect verbal SAT score landed her a place at Cornell studying linguistics. There she was courted by her husband Rukun Vaidya who mailed her illegally burned copies of the (then) hit TV shows 24 and The Sopranos while she was abroad in her favorite country, Japan. They have been spotted together in places as far as London and close as Long Island. Yet, many of their best moments were laughing at home on their couch while speaking a now endangered vernacular created from two decades of inside jokes between two of the smartest people their family and friends know.

As an executive publisher with careers at Wiley, Oxford University Press, and Mary Ann Liebert, the planet, women, and anyone hoping for the medical (or recreational) legalization of psychedelics have much to thank her for. She worried greatly about the decline of science in popular discourse and her diligent work to support important research will be her legacy.

She is mourned by her husband Ruk, her sisters Gretchen and Claire, her parents James, Sunanda, and Tushar, her brothers Chris and Jay, her grandparents Marcia, Bernadette, and Mary Margaret, family, friends and colleagues.

It is of sorrowful note that she is not survived by her mother. If there is an afterlife, she is with Ann doing crosswords. She will be greatly missed at Barbs, while reading the New Yorker, while making (and eating) pasta, and while diligently preparing her "sleep successories" before bed each night.

Donations can be made in her name to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at give.birds.cornell.edu We will be celebrating Sarah's life on October 22 at the Bryant Park Grill Garden from 12-3 pm. All are welcome, come as you are with the invitation to dress fabulously.

Thanksgiving Poppykosh * 3 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour * 1 teaspoon salt * 4 eggs * 1 cup of milk * 1 tablespoon Bisquick Once all mixed, the consistency should be sticky but extrudable. Extrude over rapidly boiling water with a gentle shaking motion to prevent the batter from sticking together. Be prepared to slice off the batter at the end of extrusion. Drain and enjoy with butter and salt.

I was a work colleague of Sarah's in the London offices of OUP/Epigeum. I remember her visits with great fondness - she was not only a dedicated and supportive colleague but a hugely fun one, too. I have many happy memories of hanging out with her in London and Chicago. I only found out this awful news yesterday, and am in the process of informing other colleagues in London who knew Sarah. Those who have seen my messages are as shocked and saddened as I am. Sending love to those who knew and loved her.

I so enjoyed getting to work with Sarah on multiple projects. So smart and kind. Her absence reverberates through the scholarly publishing community.

Such a beautifully written tribute to Sarah.

I remember Sarah well, as one of the most outstanding individuals at BHS. She was truly a gem and we were always certain she would make her mark upon the planet.
My condolences to her husband and to the entire Andrus family. I know your hearts are aching.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.

It was a true honor to work with her. I feel lucky to have had that opportunity. We will be dedicating a session on one of Sarah's favorite topics- transparency in scientific publications- to her at the upcoming National Neurotrauma Society meeting.
She will be missed.

I never met her. Though from this beautiful tribute I wish I had. Your love for her shines through this beautiful and poignant obituary and sometimes the written word can speak volumes about a persons character. You have done so in honoring her. All the good ju ju I can muster. Thank you for this beautiful remembrance.

It is with a heavy heart that I send my condolences to the Andrus family. Sarah was a shining star-bright, intelligent, so kind...a gem in the classroom and a great friend to so many. She was truly one of Bow´s finest.

May you be comforted by the love and support around you at this time of profound sadness and may your beautiful memories of Sarah comfort you during the difficult days ahead. Gretchen and Claire-your BMS family is thinking of you and sending hugs and much love. We´re so sorry. May she rest in peace.
