GREENSBORO — Sarah Lou Williamson Hammer, 91, of Greensboro, died August 18, 2009. She lived each day with compassion, joy, love, and hope. She was a caring sister, a loving mother, a wise grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother. We loved her dearly and miss her very much.
Sarah was born to the late Frank and Eunice Caison Williamson on August 28, 1917, in Roseboro, N.C. She married the late Boyd Hammer on May 15, 1940, at Elizabethtown Baptist Church. They enjoyed a long marriage and travelled the world until his death in 1984.
Sarah graduated from Meredith College and recalled that the most vivid memory of her younger years was how proud her Daddy was for her to be at Meredith. He had told her since she was 10 years old that she was going to Meredith, and promised that he would mail her an allowance of $5.00 a month, but not without a brief accompanying note cautioning her about using the money wisely. Sarah's favorite pastimes were swimming at White Lake and dances at Goldston's Beach when Johnny Long and his orchestra were based there for an entire summer.
Sarah was a career sixth grade teacher until she retired in the 1970's. She tried to instill honesty and integrity in her students and wanted them to laugh and have fun while they were learning. She frequently awed various family members with her detailed recollections of students and their antics and accomplishments from her years teaching. She loved to sew, read, give advice, and visit with friends and family. She was cherished every day of her long and meaningful life.
Sarah is survived by her brother, Carroll Williamson of Cary and two children, Worth Hammer of Greensboro and Penny Johnson of Durham. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who all loved her as "Too-Too". She lived her life with great conviction in her beliefs and unwavering commitment to her family and friends.
"Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains." - Khalil Gibran
"...blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it." - Luke 11:28
