Sarah Terry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2014.
Terry, Sarah P. (Guzman)
The escapades of her four children, a smart political commentary, and a first-rate documentary are a few of the things that Sarah Preston Terry (Guzman) enjoyed most. Just 44 years young, Sarah died on July 15, 2014, after succumbing to a long fight with ovarian cancer. Ever bemused by the human comedy around her, Sarah nearly always met adversity with a keen sense of humor. But when confronted with an injustice, or even overbearing paramilitary museum guards intent on keeping children far from culture, she would rise up to be an in-your-grill powerhouse. An artist, Sarah filled the lives of her friends and family with vivacious writing, animated conversation, and visual work that enriched all around her. Ever thoughtful to others, she was always ready with a book, craft material or story when needed most. Sarah was born on September 1, 1969 in Kansas City, Kansas, but eventually headed west, graduating with a BA in creative writing (with honors) from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and settling down with her husband Randy Guzman in Los Angeles. Later, home in Arizona gave her an unending supply of off-kilter politics to spurn and more friends and extended family than most could ever hope to gain.In addition to husband Randy, Sarah is survived by her brother John Terry, Dayton, Ohio, and sister Ellen Terry, Kansas City; by many nieces, nephews and extended family members; and especially by her life-affirming children: Olivia the resolute, 19; Elena the hilarious, 15; Jack the spontaneous, 10; and Amelia the smiling and sweet-tempered, 6. Each of them carries Sarah's gifts of compassion, intelligence, strength and style. A celebration of life will be held on August 3, 2014 from 4-7pm (remembrances at 5) at monOrchid Art Gallery, 214 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix 85004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sarah Terry Guzman Memorial Fund at www.giveforward.com

Hello Sarah's beautiful kids. I am an old friend of Sarah's. I met her when we worked together at Winstead's, and I liked her immediately. She was so genuine and fun and funny! We stayed close at KU (many trips to KC in her MG), but then we lost touch. I've tried several times over the years to find her online, because I missed her. Then I finally found her obituary. And I saw on Instagram that your Dad has passed away, too. I'm so very sorry. He obviously was an amazing man - Sarah chose him. Please take good care of yourselves and each other, and know an old friend of your Mom's is thinking of you and wishing you happiness. -Molly (Flack) Yarnevich

I knew Sarah when we were children. I am the cousin of Ann Rethorst and remember visiting Ann and, on occasion, having the added pleasure of Sarah's fun spirit added to the mix. My prayers are with you all.

Sarah welcomed me into her home some 20 years ago and I was treated with the hospitality that one gets from a lifetime friend. You inspired us all while you were fighting your battle, may your legacy continue in your four wonderful little ones and grant our dear friend Randy peace. Randy you are an amazing man and we love the friendship we have had over the years, remember, stay strong.

Such a beautiful and different obituary, yet perfect for the description. I am truly sorry for the families' loss, but it seems she was a tremendous person to be around for the short time that it was. My condolences.

Sarah was so encouraging during my first years teaching at Villa. Her kind and easy laugh was a joy to be around and i shared her passion for justice and am grateful to have been on part of her life's journey and so very sad it has ended so soon. She demonstrated a love for her children that always left room for laughter and play even in the hardest times. Her spirit will always inspire me to find the joy, speak my truth, fight for what's right and choose love.
