KOONAR, Sarjit Singh

Sarj was born in Vancouver to parents Gurbachan Kaur and Bishan Singh on January 8 - a birthday he shared with Elvis Presley. A prankster from the start, Sarj's youth was spent with his siblings and a gang of friends, roaming the neighbourhood of 7th and Quebec. Many of the friendships he forged in those days remained vibrant until his death; a testament to Sarj's fierce loyalty. The struggles Sarj faced throughout his life attuned him to the suffering of others. Many looked forward to his daily phone calls and visits, where he would deliver pieces of news from around town, a story from the past, and a quick chirp or two. The greatest joy of Sarj's life was his daughter, Jayha, whose every success filled him with awe and immense pride. Sarj is survived by Ravina Sangara and Jayha, his siblings Nirmal (Gailey), Judy (Sturla), Bil, Peck (Geevan) and David (Kulwinder), along with a host of adoring nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service on Sunday, July 15 at 3 p.m. at Riverside Funeral Hall (7475 Hopcock Road, Delta) followed by prayer service at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas (8600 No. 5 Road, Richmond).
