Scott Grainger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2025.
John Scott Grainger, 76, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away at home on January 31, 2025. Born on October 23, 1948, in Columbia, Missouri, to Robert and Naomi Grainger, Scott grew up with a love for adventure, knowledge, and a deep appreciation for the finer things in life.

An exceptional athlete in his youth, Scott was known for his strength and determination both on and off the field. He was also a proud Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected his character, discipline, and deep respect for the natural world. He carried that same spirit into the outdoors, where he found joy and challenge in the wild beauty of the American West. He climbed in the Tetons, canoed the Snake River with his father, and once paddled solo across the vast alpine waters of Jackson Lake, camping alone on an island-an experience emblematic of his quiet courage and love for nature.

After graduating from the University of Missouri, Scott began a distinguished career in health care information technology. Through dedication, innovation, and leadership, he rose to serve in senior executive roles, earning the respect of colleagues and making a lasting impact on the field.

Scott's greatest joys, however, were not found in the office but at the dinner table with good food and excellent wine, behind the wheel of a precision-engineered Porsche, and in the company of dear friends and family. He embraced life with passion and elegance, and his generous spirit and zest for life made every gathering a celebration.

He is deeply missed by his wife, Donna; his brother, Matt; his children, Laura, Michele, Ashley, and Scott; and his grandchildren, Ian and Caroline. His spirit lives on in the countless memories he created with those he loved. Scott lived well, laughed often, and loved wholeheartedly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Ballet and the North Carolina Symphony, two organizations that brought Scott much joy over the years.
