Scott Kaplan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2023.
Born and raised in Marin County, Calif., Scott was the beloved son of the late Bernard and Gayle Kaplan, formerly of Larkspur and proprietors of the Corte Madera Pharmacy. A devoted husband to Laurel Graver for 35 years who proceeded him in death in 2016. Both are now laid to rest, side by side with a view of their treasured Mountain at Fernwood Cemetery.

Scott's love of baseball started early on, playing little league with the Corte Madera Lions. This led to his lifelong passion for the SF Giants, beginning when they first came to San Francisco to play at Seal Stadium. He was never shy about sharing his knowledge and love of the game.

Scott attended both Redwood High and College of Marin. Active in the drama departments, he began what would ultimately be his career, working as a builder on sets and lights for theater groups throughout Marin including the Mt. Tam Mountain Play, Marin Theater Company, and the remodeling of the Rafael Theater. He went on to become a highly skilled builder, constructing and refurbishing homes across the county.

Scott eventually carried his tools to his favorite place (and pastime) the Field of Dogs in San Rafael. Along with Laurel they could be seen there daily with Andy and Luther, their two black labs. Their support for the park never waned and Scott was ready with a wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver, to make repairs or undertake bigger dog park projects.

He was a passionate historian of the Civil War. Together with Laurel they were constant supporters of the local drama, art, and gymnastics programs for kids. Later in life, he became an avid devotee of yoga embracing that community with daily practice and retreats.

Special thanks to the devotion and hospice care given to both Scott and Laurel from By the Bay Health.

He leaves behind many friends, and a loving family.

Rest in Peace Scott, you will be missed.

I met Scott and Laurel at the Field of Dogs dog park. They took my son and I into their hearts and brought me on board with dog park, non-profit fundraising and operations. The two of them helped me, in the eleventh hour, with moving out of an apartment and into my condo. Scott remodeled said condo and his skill, know-how and memory is part of my son's and my life, as a result. I was fortunate enough to take care of two of their sweet Black Labs, Abel and Andy (Andrew ) and we celebrated and commiserated many SF Giants outcomes.
