Scott Sampson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 1, 2017.
Scott Joseph Sampson
Sydney Forks

On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, our family's special brother Scott J. Sampson, at 43 years old, died suddenly but peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital.

Scott is survived by his father, Charles Sampson, and Glen, whom he always called his 'favourite' brother, and his wife Catherine and their sons, Benjamin and Maxwell of Vancouver, BC. Scott's mother, Sally (Farrell) Sampson, predeceased him on May 1, 2017.

Scott was a 1996 graduate of Riverview High School Special Education program. Scott's achievement was celebrated by the Canadian Down Syndrome Society by featuring his graduation picture on their 1999 calendar cover. The Special Education program taught Scott to read, which he did find great pleasure in, given his crippling arthritis. Scott participated fully in all our family's activities-including his political responsibility where he insisted on entering the voting area unassisted to mark his ballot. Scott was also one of the first members of the Cape Breton Down Syndrome Society that still is going strong today due to very capable young parents.

Cremation has taken place through T.W.Curry and a memorial service will be announced later.

Like other Down Syndrome members of this community, Scott's only demands were to be loved, accepted and appreciated for his unqualified peacefully values of honesty and purity. Scott's gift of giving was unconditional. He loved to play music, attending family birthdays, watching his favourite TV channel 47 on Eastlink. Christmas time was especially enjoyable for Scott as he celebrated everyone's happiness over that festive season. As a caring human being, Scott's life brought out the best in most people he encountered.

Today, these human beings are aborted in many 'progressive' countries according the a UN report. Decision makers have determined that a form of eugenics is necessary to try and eliminate Down syndrome from this world for purely convenience or alleged economic factors.

To remove people with Down syndrome is surely a world not worth living in. And, what other group of society considered on economic or social grounds will our decision makers focus next on eliminating?

Thank you so much for your final comments. The world, indeed, is becoming a cruel place in regards to the gift of life, at all stages. Scott was a gift from God, I did not know him but my heart goes out to his family and friends. You are right a world without Down syndrome would not be a world worth living in.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of your son and brother. While we never had the pleasure of meeting Scott, we can understand the love and joy he brought to your lives. Scott's legacy of unconditional love and acceptance is an important reminder to us all.

Dear Charles, Glen and family,

Although I did not know your son, I was very moved and impressed by your words in his obituary regarding the changing societal view of people with Down's Syndrome. I have a cousin with DS and he has brought more joy into the lives of our extended family than anyone else. I have preached about the dangers of 'viewing' others as 'others.' We are all human beings with our strengths and weaknesses, and we all reflect the greatness of God in some way. I will offer Holy Mass for Scott but also for your family, that God give you a spirit of gratitude for Scott's life. Keep up your courage.
