Sean Coakley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 16 to Mar. 18, 2023.
On March 13, 2023, Sean Webster Coakley, 23, of Lenox, Mass., made the decision to take his leave of this earthly existence, bringing an end to an all-too-brief but brilliant life.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., on October 25, 1999, to Michael and Wendy Webster Coakley, and welcomed dubiously by big brother Kevin (who, in fairness, was not even 2 years old), this blonde, blue-eyed cherub quickly charmed everyone he encountered with his wide smile and cheerful nature. The youngest of the charismatic Coakley cousins and one-third of the legendary Webster Triplets (together with cousins Finn and Liam, all born within two months of one another), his childhood was spent in the company of dogs, his grandfather's horses and the occasional barn cat.

At an early age, he gravitated to the stage - from telling jokes at Sports School Day Camp to performing in Shakespeare & Company's Riotous Youth program. His love of the Bard continued into high school and the epic Fall Festival of Shakespeare, with memorable roles in "Hamlet," "Twelfth Night," "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Macbeth." He also performed all four years in the LMMHS musical, culminating his senior year in "Little Shop of Horrors" as Mr. Mushnik.

After high school, Sean attended Clark University for one year, briefly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, drove a truck and worked in the warehouse at Cintas, before returning to higher education at Berkshire Community College where - at the time of his passing - he was a High Honors student in the pre-nursing program. In his spare time, he was a voracious reader, avid film patron, dedicated PlayStation gamer and craft cider aficionado.

At every step along his young-adult journey, Sean exhibited deep intellect, a strong moral compass and care for others - as well as a growing sense of anxiety over the state of the world and his place in it that his loving family could not assuage. In addition to his parents of Lenox and brother Kevin of Arlington, Va., his corporeal absence is deeply felt by grandparents Robert and Mary Ann Coakley of Lenox and Philip and Irmy Webster of St. Michaels, Md.; aunts and uncles Rob and Catherine Coakley of Jupiter, Fla., Stephen and Jennifer Webster of Denver, Colo., and Jonathan and Patricia Webster of Arlington, Va.; cousins Will Muchnick, Avery Hamwi, Grace Smith, Signy Coakley, Drew Webster, Robert Coakley, Finn Webster, Liam Webster and Tessa Webster; extended family, friends and his faithful canine companion, Gronk. He was predeceased by his aunt Kate Coakley and cousin Roger Muchnick Jr.

A private celebration of Sean's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support the educational programs at Shakespeare & Company that brought so much joy to Sean, either by check care of Roche Funeral Home, P.O. Box 152, Lenox, MA 01240, or electronically via shakespeare.org.

I had the pleasure of training Sean as he readied himself for admission into the Navy and bootcamp itself. He continually brought effort, dedication, and conversation to every session we had. I enjoyed his comradery, his humor, and his relaxed attitude even when facing daunting challenges ahead. I truly appreciated the time we got to spend with one another, and I am heartbroken about his passing. To his family, my deepest condolences. I cannot state that enough. I hope he found the solace he was searching for.

To the entire Coakley family: We are saddened by your loss and grieve with you. Unfortunately, it is a loss shared by too many families as too many young men and women have lost hope for a viable future. In his memory, may we renew our efforts to promote hopefulness in our youth for the future with messages such as this passage from Desiderata, "And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should...Whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."

I will never forget when he performed a perfectly memorized soliloquy from "The Scottish Play" right on the spot when I was introduced to Sean at the Lenox School. It was a very inspiring moment to me as I was lacking in self confidence at that moment in time in my own abilities as a performer. I pray now that he has found peace but his light has not gone out. I will carry his memory in my heart and view each moment to perform as a gift, an opportunity ,no matter what my nerves may say. You all are in my thoughts and prayers
