JACQUELINE HOTT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 27 to Dec. 4, 2016.
HOTT--Dr. Jacqueline Rose,

died peacefully, surrounded by her family on November 24, 2016, at the age of 91. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Morris and Ida Rose, Russian-Jewish immigrants who arrived in the US in 1910. Dr. Hott was the original independent professional woman. She kept up her demanding sex therapy and psychotherapy practice right up to the end. Retirement was a dirty word. Working six-days a week, ten to twelve hours a day, without much sleep or even food, was typical for her. If she could have died in her office just after seeing a patient she would have preferred that. In 1941, she graduated from the William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City as valedictorian and obtained a full scholarship to the New Jersey College for women, now Rutgers University. In 1943 she entered the Nurse Cadet Corps at Bellevue Hospital. In 1946 she became a clinical instructor in Psychiatric nursing at the NYU Medical School, which led to her professional career as professor and dean at Adelphi University, then executive director of the Mid Atlantic Regional Nurses Association. She was the author of books and articles too numerous to mention, and maintained a dual sex-therapy practice with her husband, Dr. Louis R. Hott, until he passed away in 1980. Along the way she found time to be a president of Hadassah and the Sisterhood of the Great Neck Synagogue, to be a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout leader, Broadway enthusiast and an avid reader. She is survived by her four children, Timothy Hott (Sandra), Lawrence Hott (Diane Garey), Sue Hott (Michael Kennelly) and Rachel Hott (Steven Leeds), ten grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. The funeral was at Sinai Chapels in Fresh Meadows, Queens on Sunday, November 27, 2016 and burial took place at Wellwood Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY. Donations may be made to the Great Neck Synagogue, 26 Old Mill Road, Great Neck, NY 11023.

I was Dr. Hott's patient for her last seven years. I think of her every day and I miss her. No one has ever treated me the way Dr. Hott did - she listened, she gave me support, she believed in me. Dr. Hott was there on the phone to convince me to call 911 because I was so suicidal. She put a concept in my mind, "triumph over mental illness". One session at a time we healed my brain, my thinking.

One day Dr. Hott gave me an enormous compliment, "you and I are alike". I think she meant in our love of our children, our love of learning and words, our love of God.

Believe me, I screamed at Dr. Hott, I confronted her, I hung up on her, I left her but miraculously she hung in there and we kept coming back together. I had my last session with Dr. Hott on Nov. 22, she passed away on Thanksgiving - the holiday she loved when her firstborn, Tim got married to Sandy in 1970. How do I know? I was there - long story.

I feel so bad. I have been meaning to call the doctor for some time just to say hello. I now live in Honduras but was her patient for a number of years. She was a wonderful therapist and so helpful. I am forever grateful.

Jackie has been an extraordinary role model for me in my life. I met her through my dear friend Rachel many years ago. Her tenacity, commitment to life and the people in it; her indomitable spirit; her sharp but subtle, deep intelligence; her sensitivity and exuberance under extremely difficult physical challenges. I didn't see her much but I thought about her a lot, especially when I was down. The thought of her great spirit inspired me and lifted me up. She gave me and many other inspiration. I will miss her. So much. Thank you Jackie for being you. You have added so much to humananity.❤

I loved and admired Jackie very much. I am a close friend of her daughter Rachel. That's how I met Jackie. I was awestruck by her keen and quiet wisdom; her unfathomable courage; her indominable spirit. She was an extraordinary role model for me. I've never met anyone like her and she will inspire and be with me until I leave this world.

An utterly delightful woman. I feel so very fortunate that I became a friend of her daughter, Rachel, so many years ago, bringing me into the Hott family embrace, where I have been subject to the extraordinary charm, intelligence, and compassion of this great matriarch. She was an absolutely lovely human being, and I am happy that she had a long and very productive life. I know we are all spending time thinking about all the many ways that she helped people. As a young artist, she was generous and supportive to me, which I will always appreciate, and I know I am not the only one. My time with her in Montauk, in Great Neck, and the last time in the hospital on First Ave a few years ago, have always been times of humor, perceptive and restless intelligence, and great love.
