Sharon Cook Gardner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 7, 2025.
Sharon Ann Cook Gardner, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, at the age of 82 in Brooksville, FL.

Born on March 1, 1943, in Haines City, Florida, Sharon lived a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.

Sharon was the cherished daughter of Rutherford (Rutus) and Mary Cook. She grew up in Haines City, where she graduated from Haines City High School in 1961. Her educational journey continued at the University of Louisville, culminating in a Master's degree from Rollins College. This strong foundation in education fueled her passion for teaching, inspiring countless students throughout her career. Sharon began her teaching journey in junior high, where she taught physical science from 1967 until 1985. She then transitioned to the senior high school level, dedicating her talents to shaping young minds until her retirement in 1997.

In her personal life, Sharon's love for antiques led her to open the Hidden Treasures Antique store, where she found joy in her post-teaching endeavors. The next adventure would be a combined effort with her dear friend Kathy Prince, opening Salon on the Park in downtown Haines City.

Sharon was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Louis Gardner. Together, they shared a profound passion for the mountains, which led them to retire in beautiful Maggie Valley, NC. Their adventures crisscrossed the country and certainly included exploring roadside stands, thrift stores, and antique malls in every town they visited, a testament to their shared enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures.

Sharon's legacy lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Mary Fair Weldon and Lesley Gardner, who is married to Bucky Buchanan. Her son, Darin Gardner, and his wife, Lis Gardner, will carry forward her spirit of love and kindness. Sharon was also a proud grandmother to her grandsons, Dalton Lott, Cole Weldon, and Andrew Weldon. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Hootie Cook, and his wife, Barbara Cook. The bonds she nurtured extended beyond her immediate family to the countless students and friends she touched throughout her life.

Known for her infectious spirit and genuine kindness, Sharon cultivated friendships that spanned continents. Whether it was her connection with folks at the hunting camp or friendships made on cruises, she had an innate ability to connect with those around her. She found joy in watching her children flourish and was immensely proud of her grandsons, who grew into outstanding men. The Prince family became an extension of her own, receiving her endless love and affection.

Sharon Ann Cook Gardner will be remembered for her boundless love, her dedication to educating the next generation, and her unwavering support for her family and friends.

Her "Legacy of Love" and kindness will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know her.

A funeral service to honor Sharon's life will be held at NorthRidge Church in Haines City, FL. on June 12, 2025, at 3:00 PM. Friends and family are welcome to join in celebrating the remarkable life of Sharon C. Gardner.

To Sharon´s family
Were so sorry for your loss
We didn´t know Sharon for very long
I had a shoulder operation and recommended my surgeon
We kept in touch but then I didn´t hear from her after some time
A mutual friend called me today and gave me the sad news
She was a good friend from the minute we met
Sorry it was so brief but still wonderful to have known her

I only knew Sharon for a few months, but we enjoyed talking about life, family and our shared hometown roots in Polk County FL. She was a truly special woman who I grew to love and admire. Her infectious laughter and generous spirit will never be forgotten.

Sharon was such an amazing mom. Grandma. 1 year we were scalloping I think 2013 and it fell on Madison´s birthday. Sharon got a cake and made sure madison was singled out for her birthday. We all sang Happy Birthday. Total surprise.and that was so special. I will always remember that big hugs and prayers for the whole family.

One day while walking down the aisle in Publix, I crossed paths with a statuesque, light filled woman. Simultaneously, we made full eye contact and smiled. My soul responded with a resounding notification...special person & kindred spirit.

I soon discovered that special woman was to be my neighbor. Her presence a blessing to the neighborhood, no doubt. My regret & loss is in not sharing more time than I did with Sharon; but the conversations we had were all enriching. Sharon, although not the type to suffer fools, still made people feel comfortable to be themselves. She´d just laugh along with this fools animated wild tangents. She could traverse the sublime to the ridiculous without missing a beat. I never felt that I had to edit myself in her presence, which is a special gift to give another. Then again, Sharon was known for her gift giving. Thank you, Sharon.

Over the last year and last months; thru the pain, the unknown, & final diagnosis, Sharon remained faith filled and steady. It was beautiful to see the bond between her & her daughter. Mary Fair joined in some conversations and their love was palpable. "By their fruits, you shall know them". Sharon spoke with great love & admiration for all her children, grandchildren & family. (even Charleston) I´m sure the feelings could only be mutual & I know that we are all grateful that this wonderful soul did not have to suffer long. I am very sorry for your loss but she´ll be looking out for you from the other side.

A woman of Grace, class, intelligence, humor, joy, gratitude, beauty, kindness, love, and most importantly a woman of God. Now she can shine in His full glory!

With respect, love & gratitude for having known you - ellen

The first thing that struck me, about Sharon, was her beautiful white hair. As one of the snowbirds on N. Ensign Pt. I didn't get to spend as much time with Sharon, as my other neighbors...to my regret.

Sharon celebrated any holiday with delivering goodie bags of candy, and often, inspirational quotes, to all of her neighbors. These treats were looked forward to, as Sharon had a knack for entertaining all of us.

I loved talking with Sharon. She had a down to earth way of viewing the world, which was always accented by her strong southern accent!

During one of our last conversations, I teased Sharon, by telling her that I considered her a true "Southern Belle." Sharon heartily laughed, then told me that her parents had sent her to finishing school. She continued by saying, " My parents must have thought I had some rough edges, that needed polishing!" Sharon was a rare gem, that needed no polishing.

Sharon was a perfect neighbor, always willing to help, if she saw a need. Sharon also spoke her mind, with insightful comments and always a touch of humor.

Sharon loved country music and our first conversation centered on the various artists that we each liked. Sharon commanded a wealth of information on many subjects and easily shared her knowledge and life experiences.

Every street in America could use a Sharon Gardner. Her spirit elevated everyone and she will be sadly missed by all of the people on N. Ensign Pt. in Crystal River.
