Sharon Jackiw Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2009.
MILFORD - Family and friends of Sharon (Edwards) Jackiw, 70, are deeply saddened by her death Nov. 13, 2009. Sharon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in German from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Cornell. Studying abroad in Munich, Germany, on a Fulbright Scholarship from 1961 to 1962, she smuggled passports over the border to help Berliners escape to the West. She served on the faculty of Wheaton College, Chatham College and the University of Maine, where she was associate director of Sponsored Programs and associate professor of German and Linguistics. Sharon was as passionate about her philanthropic work as she was about her philological scholarship. She chaired the capital campaign and served on the board of Warren Center for Communication and Learning, which named its library in her honor, and she was a regular volunteer reader for Maine Airs. A fervent supporter of women's issues, she served on the boards of Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center and Spruce Run, where she chaired the finance committee. During her tenure at the University of Maine, she was central to the University Women in the Curriculum Program and chaired the Council on the Status of Women. Later in her life, Sharon became an avid birdwatcher and was active in Maine Audubon, participating joyfully in annual bird censuses with her group, the Cardinal Sins, and serving on the Community Advisory Board to Fields Pond. Voracious reader, puzzle junkie, opera lover, bridge enthusiast and pitch-perfect raconteur, Sharon was the intellectual life of the party, a bon vivant known for her spirited conversation and zest for culture. She will be missed by all whose lives she graced. She is survived by her father and mother, Kenneth and Henrietta Edwards of Saline, Mich.; daughter, Simone Ahlborn and her husband, David, of Providence, R.I.; son, Nicholas Jackiw and his wife, Nathalie, of Vancouver, British Columbia; brother, Paul Edwards and his wife, Gayle, of Coker Creek, Tenn.; sister, Dee Vickers and her husband, Brooks, of Royal Oak, Mich.; and her loving grandchildren, Lucy, Owen and Nadege, of whom she was so proud. She is also survived by her dearest friend, Peggy Danielson of Blue Hill, who provided boundless love, comfort and support to Sharon and her family at the end of her life. A memorial celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

I really felt an emptiness last Sunday as it was nearing 5:00 pm. We, Mary and I had a date to call Sharon and Peggy every Sunday for 5:00pm cocktails. We would talk about what our week was like etc. We've done this for years, there will always be an emptiness in all our hearts.

Sharon was on Spruce Run's Steering and Finance Committees when I was a young woman learning how to manage the budget with all its variables in the context of Spruce Run's collective organizational structure. She was patient, thoughtful, and very funny as a mentor to me in that process. I especially appreciated her quiet, clear demeanor that kept the group focused and using time wisely. She also taught me that women can be more comfortable in their clothes with a minimum of underwear and still appear dignified and serious. I am so sad to lose her.

I only found out, today of Sharon's passing. I didn't even know she'd been ill. I knew Sharon through my dear friend, Mary Lou Colbath, whom we both lost in April of 2007. She and Mary Lou always came to my theatre company's shows. After Mary Lou's passing Sharon and I and often times another friend, Jessie got together for lunch. One of the last times I saw Sharon we met for lunch at Harvest Moon in Orono. Not knowing her background I was telling her about my mother having escaped East Germany just after the war. Then she told me her own amazing story smuggling in passports to get East Germans out. I didn't know her nearly as well as I would have liked and I'm very saddened by her passing. I am comforted to know, however that she and Mary Lou are somewhere right now discussing all things theatrical and having a good laugh.

I met Sharon in the early '70s when I was a student at Wheaton and she was on the German faculty and an academic dean. I greatly admired her and enjoyed her lectures, but also was a bit intimidated by her elegance and intelligence. Later, when I worked at Wheaton, I discovered her kindness, generosity, and killing sense of humor, which made it easier to cope with her erudition.

I was thrilled when she moved up to Maine. I'll miss her perspective on Penobscot Theatre productions and our occasional meals with her and Peggy. Wherever she is now, I hope there are birds.

I shall remember Sharon as a colleague at the Office of Sponsored Programs, University of Maine in Orono. Willing to assist all with the daily routines. Enjoyed our chats about Germany and the adventure of it all.

We knew Sharon only briefly....she was our mother's room-mate at Brewer Rehab. She and Peggy were very good to our mother. One morning when Mom was trying to do the crossword puzzle in the Bangor Daily News,Mom was stuck....My sister tried to help but couldn't....from behind the curtain in bed #1 came the answer : ROQ and then an explanation that the spelling might be ROC depending on how it was used. She was a wealth of information and helped us many times to figure out what Mom was trying to tell us when she was confused.Sharon was a wonderful person.

Last Sunday, numbed by the tragic news, I sat down to do the Weekly crossword puzzle and realized that my "phone a friend" was gone. Many times we had poured together over obscure clues and collaboratively solved the difficult puzzles. I will greatly miss my "excuse" to call Sharon
on Sunday mornings.

Sharon was generous with her time and money to important work in this community and always available to share her vast experience with women still learning the ropes. I will remember her on those wet, chilly mornings in May. When no one else in the group could identify a bird by its song, I could run over to Sharon and say "Sharon, what was that?" and I'd learn, because she knew, she always knew.

Sharon also contributed her time and talents to The Animal Orphanage in Old Town during our capital campaign. My deepest sympathies are extended to family and friends during this difficult time.

Too soon, too sudden, and most dearly missed. Few people dream or aspire to pursue, let alone accomplish, even the smallest of contributions Sharon made in her lifetime. From fearless and dangerous to loving and determined, she was one whose combined qualities shall not be encountered twice.

With greatest and deepest love,
Jim and Michaela Edwards
