Shawn Michael Babonis

Shawn Michael Babonis, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was suddenly and tragically called home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 , at the age of 49. Shawn was born on November 11, 1974 at Oak Knoll Naval Medical Center in Oakland, California, Shawn was a spirited and hardworking individual who dedicated his life to the construction and demolition industry.

Shawn's educational journey began at El Toro Marine School in Irvine, California, and continued through University High School in Irvine, California and Floyd E. Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He furthered his education at Tidewater Community College. Shawn's career commenced at Greenbriar, GMC Pontiac, Buick Oldsmobile, in the heavy shop. By the age of 23, he had opened his own company, Atlantic Demolition Inc., and became a Class A Contractor. His career was marked by significant contributions to various cities and military installations, including NAS Oceana Naval Shipyard Portsmouth, Naval Hospital Portsmouth, and Langley Air Force Base, among others Old Dominion University and College of William & Mary. Shawn also founded two other companies, ADI and SMB Park N Pool LLC, specializing in playground installations for schools and parks across Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina.

Apart from his professional achievements, Shawn was well known for his passion golfing and racing, camping, and motorcycling, hobbies that brought him immense joy and fulfillment throughout his life.
He was known for his generosity and willingness to help others, often going out of his way to assist those in need.
Shawn will be remembered for his vibrant spirit and enthusiasm, which he generously shared with all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were part of his community.

Shawn is survived by his mother, Margaret Babonis of Virginia Beach, VA; his father, Frankland Babonis of Elizabeth City, NC; his brother, Kevin Babonis of San Diego, CA; his sister, Bridget Joyner NC, his Brother in Law, Johnny Joyner of NC, his nieces, Makenzie Babonis of Elizabeth City, NC, Kiele and Emrie Scott of NC; and his nephews, Ethan and Cooper Babonis of Virginia Beach, VA. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Jacob Babonis, and his grandparents, Victor and Helen Babonis, June and Harold Dolin.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 2:00 PM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Inc., located at 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23517. The funeral home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
