Deborah Marie "Debbie" Lough (née Marks), 59, of Martinsburg, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014, in Potomac, Maryland, with her family by her side.

Born August 13, 1954, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Alvin and the late Marie Marks of Temple Hills, Maryland.

Debbie held a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree in Special Education from West Virginia University. Debbie served as a teacher and special education teacher in Berkeley County public schools for approximately 20 years. Most recently, she was a gifted education teacher at Mountain Ridge Intermediate School.

Debbie devoted her life to nurturing others, and graced all who knew her with her intelligence, kindness, patience, and loyalty. A devoted teacher, Debbie used her gifts to encourage and enlighten her students and colleagues. A devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister, Debbie brought gentleness, laughter, and endless love to her family. In her life and battle with cancer, Debbie taught us all to live and love better. Debbie's light was the brightest star in the lives of those she touched. We will carry her light with us always, and bring others the joy of her boundless love.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel L. Lough of Martinsburg; her son, Sean D. Lough of Martinsburg; her daughter, Kristin M. Lough, of Washington, D.C.; father, Alvin Marks; three sisters, Sr. Joyce Marks, IHM, Brenda Young, and Cindy Tanenbaum; and two brothers, Ron Marks and Tom Marks.

Sweet Deb, your legacy lives on in your family. I'm grateful to know Kristin, Sean, and Dan. There's not a memory from my time in Maryland, that does not have Kristin and Sean in it. You were always gracious and kind to me, and it was such a pleasure getting to know you and being a part of the "family." From your sweet smile and gentle spirit, Deb, you will be forever missed. May you rest in peace and comfort knowing that you were well loved. Thank you leaving such an example of how to care for others.

Debbie was my daughter's teacher at St. Jo's. She was such a wonderful teacher, and the kids loved her. The picture used here looks just like I remember her. That pretty smile, and always a kind word. My prayers to the family to mend their broken hearts, but always remembering that they will see her again!

Jann and I send our prayers and best wishes to you in this tough time. I had the pleasure of working with her for a number of years at Tuscarora. She will be remembered as a dedicated teacher to her students.

A soft spoken, caring, teacher and mother. I can't tell you who most of my teachers were growing up, but I will always remember Deborah Lough. She was always patient with me, as she was with all of us. I'll miss her, but she will always be a positive impact on me as I live my life.

Debbie was my sweet and gracious sister-in-law, but in my heart she will always be my sister. She was such a courageous and brave fighter in the last year of her life--with her loving family always by her side. She completed my brother's world by being the wife that he adored, or as he would lovingly say, "she's my little girl." Her kids worshiped the ground that she walked on as she was the mother that dreams are made of... I never knew her to be anything but gentle and kind throughout her short 59 years of life. I'm Blessed to have known her and to have shared many memories with her, as we will meet again. She will now be cherished and comforted by the warm embrace of her mother, her grandmother, and by my Perfect Father.
Rest Well my Precious Sister and Let Your Spirit Soar. God Bless You.
Forever with Love, Sandy and Tom

Debbie was my co- worker at Tuscarora and also was an enrichment teacher to both of my daughters. Her compassion for her students will never be forgotten. She lives on in each one of them.
I pray for comfort for her loving family.

Howard and I are so sorry. I felt that Debbie was my girlfriend and always looked forward to catching up with her at all the Marks' family occasions. She was such a warm, open, friendly person who I so enjoyed spending time with. And she was a great cook -- I will now treasure the recipes I have gotten from her over the years. Our hearts go out to the Lough and Marks' families.

With love,

We are saddened to hear of Mrs. Lough's passing. She was my daughter's 3rd grade teacher at Tuscarora Elementary and was an awesome role model. For a time, I was her classroom's Read-a-Loud mom. I was thrilled to know that she went back to Gifted teaching.

May she rest in peace, but always watch over her family and friends.
