Shirley Mae Flack

Shirley Mae Moore Miller Flack of Woodland, died after a short illness due to cancer, at her home with family members at her side on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012. She was 85. She was born in Overton, Neb., on March 31, 1927 to Cecil Ione Adams and Klondyke Moore. Her family later moved to California, living in Madison and Fair Oaks initially. Then, with the advent of World War II, they moved to Tahoe City at the north end of Lake Tahoe. Her parents worked for the Ehrman family of San Francisco who kept a summer home on the lake. The home and grounds are now Sugar Pine Point State Park. Her parents and beloved brother, Denny, lived on the grounds in a log cabin.
After the end of the war they moved to Pollock Pines and Shirley and Denny took the bus to attend El Dorado High School in Placerville. Her father worked for PG&E and SMUD during the building of hydroelectric dams and power grids and as a union laborer on the expansion of the highways in the Sierra Mountains.
After graduation, Shirley attended secretarial school and lived in a boarding house across the street from the Governor's Mansion in Sacramento where she met and married Charles Richard (Dick) Miller of Davis. They settled down in Davis and had three children, Charles Edward Miller of Nehalem, Ore., Linda Lee MIller Ogner of Woodland and Rita Eileen Miller Francisco Elsey of West Sacramento.
In 1968, after their two eldest children had left home, Shirley and Dick divorced and Shirley worked for a few years at the Davis High School Library and later, for the state of California in Sacramento. She was active for some time in the League of Women Voters registering new voters and serving as a precinct Poll worker. She was a lifetime liberal Democrat and a lover of books and libraries. She made awesome fruit pies and sumptuous fried chicken. She loved to quilt and made several beautiful ones as gifts. Her favorite birthday treat was fresh strawberry shortcake.
In 1975, Shirley married Lyle Theron Flack, a 40-year postal worker. They made their home in Citrus Heights until his death in 2000. Following his death, she lived briefly in Rocklin and then moved to Woodland, where she quietly lived out her remaining years taking great delight in her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Shirley's remains will be interred at the Westwood Hills Memorial Park in Placerville, near her parents. At her request, no services will be held.
