Shirley A. Gergel Shirley A. Zimmer Gergel, age 78, a resident of St. Mary’s Home East dies Friday January 19, 2007. She was born September 29, 1928 in Erie, the daughter of the late Walter Zimmer and Ruth Speice Zimmer Manning. Shirley graduated from a Washington D.C. high school and from Youngstown State University. She has taught in Diocesan schools in North East, Erie, and Oil City. In 1978 she married John Gergel and they moved to Allegany N.Y. where she worked for the Allegany School District and also in the Chapel laundry at St. Bonaventure University. Following her husband’s death in 2004, Shirley moved back to Erie. She enjoyed her pets, working garage sales, gardening, and bird watching. Shirley is survived by many cousins plus nieces and nephews through marriage. Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Further visiting Tuesday in the Chapel of St. Mary’s East, (Reed St. entrance) from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at which time a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
