Shirley Haas Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Jan. 23, 2022.
Shirley Jane (Lowry) Haas, 97, former Chicago journalist and public relations professional, died peacefully at her Lincoln Park home Wednesday evening, Jan. 19, 2022 from age-related complications following from a stroke she suffered in October. A long-time resident of the iconic Mies Van der Rohe building at the corner of Diversey and Sheridan, Shirley used to catch the 151-bus outside her door every weekday and commute downtown to her PR job at the Chicago Health Dept. She was the eldest daughter of Chicago Police Dept. Lt. Loftus T. Lowry, an immigrant from County Down, Northern Ireland, and Chicago-born Catherine (Lilien) Lowry. Growing up on the South Side, Shirley attended Calumet Park High School, graduating second in her class. While still in high school, Shirley started her journalism career by writing a confidential neighborhood gossip column for her community newspaper, The Auburn Parker. She won a scholarship to the University of Chicago, which she accepted over her father's objections, and earned her BA in philosophy and the humanities. After college, Shirley was hired by the City News Bureau of Chicago, starting out covering crime and police beats, then moving to the courts. While there, she worked under the tutelage of City News' legendary hardboiled editors, and had many stories to tell about her adventures covering breaking stories all over Chicagoland. Not having a car, she would have to get to her assignments by public transport--riding either the el, a trolley car, or bus--at all hours of the day and night. As a young woman starting out in what had been a male-dominated profession, she had to confront her share of anti-female bias as she carried out her work. But she never let "the guys"--editors, male reporters or policemen--stop her or keep her from covering a story. From City News, she was hired by the Chicago Tribune as a reporter, and covered crime, courts, and community and woman-related stories. One big assignment was when she was sent to cover the 1956 Republican convention in San Francisco, to get "the female perspective." To obtain a coveted interview with Second Lady Pat Nixon, she crawled on her hands and knees through a crowded banquet hall until she reached Pat Nixon's table. Mrs. Nixon politely agreed to answer her questions, appreciating her moxie. In the late 50's, Shirley met and married fellow journalist Joseph Haas, reporter for the Chicago Daily News, which led to a hiatus in her career so she could be a full-time at-home mom after the birth of her son Jaime, soon followed by daughter Wendy Jocelyn. She did continue in PR from home during this time, working for the National Retarded Children's Association. For a number of years in the 60's, she also wrote a weekly children's book column in the Chicago Daily News Panorama section, under her maiden name, Shirley Lowry. (Her husband Joe Haas worked there and got her that assignment, which she really enjoyed, having always been an avid lover and reader of all kinds of books. One of her favorites was Alice in Wonderland, one of the many classics she read out loud to her kids.). But when her husband died suddenly in 1971, she had to get back to work to support the family. Starting out doing public relations locally in her Beverly neighborhood, she was able to eventually land a job in the mayor's press office, where she did press and community outreach, occasionally writing speeches for then Mayor Richard J. Daley when he needed to address a community event. From there, she moved to City Office for Senior Citizens as director of community education, then earned a promotion to being the head of PR for the Chicago Public Library as Chief of Public Information. Her final city PR posting was with the Chicago Health Dept., where one of her signal achievements was in starting to publicize and disseminate urgently-needed public health info about the burgeoning AIDs crisis. She liked to tell of working under 5 Chicago mayors, starting with Richard J. Daley, then Bilandic, Byrne, Washington, and the 2nd Daley. She had occasion to meet and work with each of them in person, and had the photographs to prove it. She retired from city service in 1993, but did not stop working. Instead, she bought a commercial property in the Andersonville neighborhood, and with help from her sister Sally Garza ran a quaint used bookstore in one of her storefronts, called The Fiery Clockface. Many book and poetry readings were held there--it became a beloved community gathering place while it was opened. In later years, Shirley kept up her writing by taking classes at the Center for Life and Learning at 4th Presbyterian Church, where her favorite class was memoir writing. Her goal was to always put something funny into one of her accounts, and she usually succeeded. Active up to almost the very end, she did weekly water aerobics classes and enjoyed walking in Lincoln Park, until confined to a wheel chair she enjoyed being taken out on what she called "buggy rides" there, where she loved to watch the dogs cavorting close to the Lincoln Park lagoon. She kept her subscription to the Chicago Tribune active right to the end, and read it every day. She is survived by her son Jaime, her daughter Jocelyn, grandsons Sam and Eli, step-grand-daughters Karine, Catherine, and Patricia, great-nieces Moni and Alex Garza, and other relatives and friends near and far from her long and rich life. She was deeply loved, and will be sorely missed! A memorial celebration of life service is being planned. Interment at Graceland Cemetery will be private.

Shirley was my lifelong friend. We were neighbors, schoolmates, members of her girls club. We played tennis, walked to school together and went to dances together. Shirley got me into her girls club of which we were the last two living members. Shirley always said she was going to live to be 100. She almost made it. We kept in touch all through the years even though I moved to Arizona in the "70's". Shirley was great leader and a strong woman before the feminist movement began; a woman before her time.
She kept up with all the girls in the club and I've cherished our lifelong friendship.
Shirley, save me a spot next to you in heaven, I'm not far behind you.
Your loving friend

My deepest sympathy to the family.
I know her daughter Jocelyn from the outdoor municipal pool in Deux-Montagnes, Quebec. I met Shirley back in the days when Jocelyn would bring her to the pool to swim when she visited Quebec. From all the stories I hear, she was a special Lady.
Her stories, her values, and her love will live on in her family; a wonderful legacy.

Shirley was a good friend of our family. She had tremendous energy and like a true Chicago native would take the bus from the symphony to a jazz performance right afterwards. Everyone will miss her parties, stories and spark.

Dear Jamie and Jocelyn,
Your Mother will be so missed by so many. My prayers are with you.
I will not forget all the times we spent together as a family at the cabin in Canada that your Dad and Jay built.
Nor will i forget the wonderful visits together in her beautiful home. Great Aunt Shirley was a true delight to be with, laughing, looking through old photographs, and discussing literature. She has inspired me in so many ways.
Our Thanksgiving at Gammy's (Aunt Sylvia's) house will always be yet another fond memory, as Great Uncle Joe, Uncle Jay and Aunt Sherry, the Speers, were all in attendance. We were such young children then.
My empathy with you is deep and true. I am here for you when you need me. I have always loved Great Aunt Shirley very much and felt such a strong bond with her. I am so sorry. With love, Liz

Dear Jocelyn and Jaime, We are the "snowbird" neighbors, next door to Shirley on the 11th floor, only in the summer. Shirley was a great "plant sitter" while we were away at our winter place in Savannah GA and we have traded many a martini with her and will miss her very much.

I met Shirley about a dozen years ago at a house party in her Sheraton Avenue home. What a delightful evening I had.
I thought she might have been the role model Rosalind Russell had for the movie Auntie Mame, and this must be what it was like at Gertrude Stein's place in Paris before my time, and and and . . .
The years from then until now I would see her every few months at the monthly Friday night jazz sessions at Chicago's Union League. When Shirley was there, at the front table, the vibe in the room was better!
My condolences to her family. Shirley will be missed by friends far and near.

We are much saddened but also having many fond memories of Shirley, our former 11th floor neighbor at 340 W Diversey. Shirley and Hazy, 2 months separated in age, rode many a bus together to the 4th Presbyterian for senior classes and programs. They were in many ways sisters in spirit, including the sharing of an occasional martini. Shirley's life accomplishments and spirit will continue to shine in her legacy, as will her memory in our hearts. Love from both of us, Tom and Hazy

Dear Jocelyn, Jaime and family,
It was a privilege to get to know Shirley through Memoir classes at CLL. Her stories were funny, entertaining, and always interesting. She inspired me and many others with all that she accomplished. Love that word "moxie"--it fits her so well. Sincere condolences to you.

I am a relative of Shirley´s Irish side of the family. My mum Cis Weir nee Lowry is a full cousin. I last saw Shirley on a visit to Chicago 2013 and spent precious time with her. She adored talking and showing photographs of her ancestors. Had a very sociable evening at her home on Diversey with martinis and beautiful chocolate cake for our wedding anniversary that day. My mum is distraught as very fond of Shirley they had kept in touch with occasional letters and Xmas cards. Mum is 6 months younger than Shirley. There are two other surviving female cousins here in NI Sally and Enie.
Shirley RIP you left your mark

What a loss this is. Shirly was very close with my sister-in-law the late Selma Friend Hayman, and after her death with the rest of the family. Jim and I were not only friends but colleagues as we worked together with the Friends of Literature for many years. She will be sorely missed.
