Shirley L. (Lyon) Hodges, 78, passed away on April 14, 2022, at Mercy Medical Center. She was born in Barre, VT to the late Howard W. and Arlene E. (Hutchinson) Lyon on April 15, 1943. Shirley received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Adelphi University in 1965 after transferring from Alderson Broaddus, received a certificate in adult nurse practitioner program from UMASS in 1978, a certificate in Women’s Health from NAACOG in 1980, ASPO certification in childbirth preparation in 1983, adult nurse practitioner certification in 1991. She worked as a Public Health Nurse in New York City from 1966-1970 where she met her husband, Nelson. She was a Public Health Nurse in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands from 1970-1972, Staff Nurse at Noble Hospital from 1972-1973, OBGYN/Family Planning staff nurse from 1975-1978 at Baystate Medical Center, Ambulatory Care at Baystate Medical Center from 1978-1986, Women’s health practitioner & women’s service coordinator at Providence Hospital from 1987-1988, Huntington/Worthington Healthcare Association 1988 - 2010. Shirley also worked in the public healthcare system for Brightwood-Riverview Healthcare in Springfield, Westfield Respite Facility, Huntington Healthcare Center in Huntington and for Gateway Regional School based Health Center. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Gideons and was a youth leader at Central Baptist Church in Westfield. Shirley currently was a member of Russell Community Church. She was a devout Christian; she was very spiritual and often reminded others about forgiveness. Her God, family and profession were extremely dear to her. Other loves included her grandchildren, gardens, flowers, travel, reading, and reflections including journaling and bible studies. She was a true woman of conviction and known to wear her heart on her sleeve. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Nelson Hodges of Russell, her loving children, Lisa H. Crispin and her husband William Scot, and their children, Andrew Crispin, Rose Crispin and Emily Crispin of Wilmington, MA; Laurie J. Hodges and her partner James Mott; Laurie’s children, Accalia Button, Maya Button, Mallori Button and Trey Button of Thornton, Colorado and Timothy N. Hodges and his wife Sondra M. and their children, Michael Hodges and his wife Sameiby, Alec Hodges and Eric Hodges of Glen Burnie, Maryland and four great grandchildren, Samantha, Jasmine and Sophia Hodges and Lyla Crispin. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 11:30 AM in the Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St. Westfield, MA 01085. Visiting hours will precede the service from 9:30-11:30 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 1 PM in the Hope Cemetery, Barre, VT. I worked with Shirley for many years at the Huntington Health Center, and always found her to be kind, caring, and competent . I just found out that she passed and am very sad to hear it, and send my heartfelt condolences to all who loved her.

Shirley was a light in many lives in her short time on this earth. She was not only a fierce warrior for the Lord but a caring, loving and giving; Wife,Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and disciple of the Lord. Shirley is truly missed and will continue to be missed.
