Shirley Flower Howard, passed away on June 23, 2024,
at the remarkable age of 99.
Born on December 26, 1924 in
Rye, New York, she was a spirited individual whose zest for life touched everyone she met.

Shirley's education journey began at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry NY, continued through Choate/Rosemary Prep School in CT and culminated with higher education at Barnard College and Connecticut College.
Throughout her life, Shirley embraced a wide array of interests that reflected her lively and adventurous spirit.
She was an avid gardener, reader and New Yorker subscriber
and nature lover who helped co-found the
Lyme Conservation Land Trust
She also found joy in swimming in waters of Maine , Long Island Sound and Squam Lake NH as well as kayaking in the Duck River in CT

Her love for travel was profound.
Some of her favorite destinations
included Provence France , Hawaii,
Australia and Bali

Locally, she took delight on the shores and in the woods
of Maine and Connecticut while spending her winters in Florida.

An athlete at heart, Shirley enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming and boating.
Later in life she was a force on the both the croquet and bocce courts
She was a yYankees fan, and even briefly a Saints fan,
while living in New Orleans with her second husband Sedgwick Howard

Family was central to Shirley's life. She was a loving mother to four children and leaves behind a legacy through her son, Henry Corwin Flower Moore, 'Corky' of Mollala Oregon,
and daughters Megan Moore Eno, Lyme CT and
Shirley Moore Mahoney, 'Missy, of Needham MA
She was also a cherished sister to
Betsy Gotbaum of NYC and
Bickley Simpson now of San Francisco CA

Her family circle extended to her role as a grandmother of six
Tim Moore, Silene Synder, Trudy Eno Burgess, Erin Mahoney LaRoque, Caroline Moore Mahoney and Elizabeth Leigh Mahoney
She was also great-grandmother of five
Gretchen, Wills and Brooke Burgess
Tristan Synder and Camille LaRoque
Shirley was also a beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews

Shirley was preceded in death by her brother Corwin Flower, her father Henry Corwin Flower, affectionately known as 'Pop,' her mother Elisabeth Smith Flower, known as 'Gambet,' and her son William Graham Moore, Graham

A service to celebrate Shirley's life well lived will be held at Old Lyme Congregational Church on Ferry Rd in Old Lyme, CT, on August 4, 2024 at 1pm

Eaton Funeral Home in Needham, MA, is assisting the family during this time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley's memory can be made to the
Trustees of Reservations of Massachusetts or
The Lyme /Old Lyme Land Trust in Connecticut
honoring her love for nature and the outdoors.

Shirley Howard's life was a tapestry of joy, adventure, and love-a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

I think Shirley is the most fearless person I have ever encountered, (other than her daughter Missy) . She is a bright light to follow, someone to think of when I am unsure and not brave.
