Shirley Kaiser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 8, 2025.
Shirley Jean Kaiser (Davenport), age 93, passed away on April 29, 2025, after a short hospitalization. Shirley was born on April 19, 1932, in Spokane, Washington, the ninth of ten children of Gordon Davenport and Hilda Sebo. She was the last surviving sibling among five brothers and four sisters.

Shirley graduated from Lewis & Clark High School, Class of 1950. Following in the footsteps of her father and siblings, she began working for "the phone company." In June 1955, she married Daniel Kaiser and moved to California, returning to Seattle in 1960, where they enjoyed countless dinners and gatherings with her beloved siblings.

Shirley raised three children, learned to drive, and volunteered enthusiastically for every Mercer Island PTA activity she could. She later returned to work at "the phone company" where she ultimately retired in 2000. Throughout her life, Shirley found joy in card making, crafting, church activities, and her grandchildren. She thrived in her Spiritridge Townhome community, proudly serving as a "social committee of one." In her retirement, she loved catering parties - there wasn't a recipe she wouldn't happily share or an event she didn't bring a special "goody".

Later, Shirley resided at The Gardens at Town Square, where she made new friends, volunteered wherever she could, and continued her beloved tradition of sending cards to family and friends. As her memory declined, she spent her final two years at The Golden Age Retirement Home in Woodinville, lovingly cared for by Winnie and Ani. Thank you to the staff at Overlake Hospital 4W and Evergreen Health Hospice for making her last days comfortable.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and all nine of her siblings: Dorothy Martin, Bob Davenport, Winifred Hickey, Ed Davenport, Glenn Davenport, Gordon Davenport Jr., William Davenport, Betty Berry, and Marilyn Olsen, as well as two nephews and three nieces.

She will be deeply missed by her children: Cary Lynn Bright (Rory), Kim Kaiser (Lori), and Chris Kaiser (Cathy); her three grandchildren: Aaron, Kelsey (Betsy), and Corinne (Tyler); her great-grandchild; seventeen Davenport nieces and nephews and their extended families; and her dear Craft Group and Coffee Group friends.

We are forever grateful that Shirley lived each day to its fullest, loved us unconditionally, and never forgot to send us home with helpful tips - and Tupperware - after every visit.

Shirley's "Grand Finale" Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 9, at 2:00 PM at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, 3605 84th Ave SE, Mercer Island, Washington 98040. She will be inurned in the church's Remembrance Garden.

In Shirley's memory, we invite you to send a card to a friend or bring a "goody" to your next gathering - a small tribute to a well-lived life and the beautiful memories she leaves behind.

There truly are not words, adequate enough to describe the heart of Shirley.
She was one of the kindest, sweetest and most generous women that I´ve had the pleasure of sharing a friendship with in my lifetime.

We met by chance at a seminar hosted by the Secret Garden Tea Room in the Factoria Mall.
In no time at all, Shirley, myself, Irene, Kay, Kathy and Angie formed our own small card/craft group from this chance encounter.

She was a non stop type of gal and below are just a handful of her contributions to our family.

She catered our son´s wedding reception, our daughter-in-law´s bridal shower, hosted a grandmother shower for myself, assisted with my annual Christmas dinner table scapes at my church, catered events at Common Folk Gift Shop and brought us treats for every holiday.
She even opened her home to 4 of us during an ice storm, as we had no power for several days.

She taught me many things that I will carry through my lifetime.
She was so adorable and always looked well put together.
I have missed her terribly and our chats as we walked together in her Spiritridge neighborhood.

I believe that each day was a gift to her and she lived it well.

She is now once again alive, healed and using her God given talents

With much love and gratitude,
Ron and Kathryn Regalado and family

You have paved the way for your Crossroads Coffee Group to days ahead. Always first at "our table" with your goodies and your hot chocolate. Much joy visiting, listening to happenings in your life and always a smile. God has his "organizer of things" next to him and now can try to keep the rest of in line. God blessed us with you, thank you.

Shirley was my dad's and my neighbor in Spiritridge for about 15 years. She frequently would bring us all manner of wonderful goodies to eat, especially at Christmas but other times of the year as well. She sent us cards for about 7 special occasions each year [Valentine's Day, our birthdays, Easter, etc.] And most importantly, she frequently would just drop in to chat with us about all sorts of things. To use the cliche, no words can describe how nice a person she is/was. May her family be surrounded by infinite love.

Shirley was a great friend and wonderful co-worker from our times together at the 'phone company' (Pacific NW Bell, USWest, Qwest, etc.). She was always a positive light in the room, freely sharing her time and recipes. I still have a number of them in her handwriting that I use in my own recipe binder. Shirley loved her family and spoke of her children and grandchildren often. She will be missed on earth, but welcomed on up to sing with the angels.

Your love was ways felt in more ways then I could have ever imagined. You touch so many people with a simple hello and a smile. Always in the kitchen making a favorite treat. I spent many days with you and loved every minute. You will forever be my angel watching over me. I love you always and forever Grams!

We were blessed to have such a fabulous mom, who did not learn to drive until she was about 30 years old. Lots of memories of walking up 15th st. to the A&P with Kim and I holding onto the wagon with Chris in it. She could not buy many groceries that was for sure! She rose above it all and made a life full of joy and love. LOVE YOU MOM! So glad you are in the arms of your Daddy & Mommy and 9 siblings. Yours was a life well lived!
