Shirley Moses Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 9, 2013.
Shirley Anne Moses, 91, died at the home of her caregiver in Alum Creek, WV, on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Born to the late Mildred Mather and Stanford Hunter Moses in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 13, 1922. She grew up in Oak Park, Illinois and graduated from DePauw University with a degree in Botany. Soon after, she came to Charleston as the Camping Director for the Mountain Laurel Girl Scout Council. Shirley traveled internationally with the Girl Scout organization, having helped to establish Girl Scout troops in over fifteen countries worldwide. She lived and worked in Hilo, Hawaii and London, England. She worked at the Girl Scout National Headquarters in New York City before returning to Charleston as the Executive Director of the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council in January of 1974. She was honored for her work in that position with a reception given by the Governor's wife at the Governor's Mansion in April of 1985. Shirley was a resident of South Charleston for 38 years and a long time member of All Saints Episcopal Church. In her retirement, she was an active member of the Allied Artists, the Montrose Music Club, and an avid gardener. Those who knew her will remember her wit and wry sense of humor. She is survived by her nieces; Carolyn McCorkle and Amy Russell and her nephew; Andrew Bray all of Wilmington, North Carolina. A Memorial service will be held at Saint Christopher's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 1:00 PM with The Reverend Kent Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Gardens in Villa Park, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tribute Fund at Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, P. O. Box 507, Charleston, WV 25322, for use by Girl Scout camps and campers throughout West Virginia. Memories of Shirley may be shared by visiting www.snodgrassfuneral.com and selecting the obituary.
