Shirley Pyett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2017.
Shirley Margaret Pyett (née Campbell), of Melfort, SK, passed away on January 1, 2017. She was 82 years old.

Shirley is survived by her children, David (Sandi) of Ottawa, ON, Bruce (Miriam) and Brenda (Dan Craig) of Saskatoon, SK, and her five grandchildren: Graham, Bronwyn, and Mitchell, of Saskatoon, SK, Kaitlyn of Leeds, UK, and Malcolm, of Ottawa, ON. She is predeceased by her husband, Marvin Pyett; her son, Wayne; her daughter, Elizabeth Anne; her parents, Mabel and Malcolm (Mac) Campbell; Marvin's parents, Harley and Mary Pyett; and her sister, Sylvia Higgins.

Shirley was born on August 19, 1934, in Glidden, SK to Malcolm and Mabel Campbell. After spending the first few years of her childhood on her family's homestead outside Glidden, she moved to Melfort where she lived for the rest of her life. In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart Marvin Pyett, and together they had 5 children. Primarily a homemaker, Shirley also worked as a photo retoucher and colourist, and later at Melfort Electric, where Marvin was a part owner and employee. She also served on the Melfort Library Board and was a faithful member of the Melfort United Church. Shirley had a number of hobbies over her life, including knitting, sewing, quilting, and woodworking with her husband. She would always take to new skills quickly, and excelled at everything she put her mind to. Marvin and Shirley were also avid motorcyclists, exploring western Canada on their touring bike. They also loved to go camping in their RV. In later years Shirley enjoyed travelling with her friends, from short jaunts to the casino to a trip-of-a-lifetime cruise. She loved spending time with her family, whether in Saskatoon or Ottawa, but especially at Waskesiu for her annual birthday party.

Shirley passed away peacefully in the Melfort Union Hospital after a short illness. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother (Nanny), and a good friend to those who knew her.

The funeral is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Melfort United Church. Rev. Charles McKenzie will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Shirley's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Melfort United Church, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of Melfort Funeral Home.

David, Bruce, Brenda and families - my deepest condolences on the passing of your mom. As my favourite aunt, I always appreciated more than you know the visits to me in Toronto when in the province visiting David. She was funny, truthful and always had a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eyes. I know when I'll think of her it will be with a smile on my face and a tear in my heart.

Dear Bruce and family,
Your Mom was a gem. Although we did not know her well or spend much time with her, the times we met were always fun and full of laughter. I see her smile. I feel her kindness and independence and sense of fun. You will miss her.
We send you strength and peace as you adjust to life without her presence. Her legacy to you is all she taught you through your lives, both in word and deed. That is quite a treasure to be left with and wonderful example in living to follow.
Hugs,
Keith and Hazel Head

So happy that Shirley came to visit Cape Breton last May. Thank you, David for making that visit possible. We went to school here at Lake Ainslie for a short time after the war when Uncle Mac thought he would like to return home, , but jobs were scarce. His dream was to open a store. Aunt Mabel, Sylvia and Shirley came too. What a lovely memory of those few months with us. Until we meet again....... Love, Cathy, and D J.
