Age 97, on Friday, March 22, 2019. Husband of 71 years of Sylvia; father of Neil, Richard (Judy Beck), James (Maureen Kelly) and William (Leslie Hall); grandfather of David (Catherine Blauvelt), Anne (z"l), Hillary (Michael Palmieri), Sarah (Matthew Cohen), Deborah (Mathew Levine), Samuel, Ethan, Hannah, Abigail, Adam, Daniel and Molly; great-grandfather of Arthur, Joshua, Noah and Diana. Brother of Jean Simon. Sidney's eventful life spanned almost a century, far too rich to capture in an obituary. He mostly grew up in The Depression. His uncle's untimely death inspired Sidney at an early age to want to become a physician. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, both undergraduate and then medical school under the sponsorship of the US Army. He graduated to become a flight surgeon in the Army Air Corps at the end of World War II. Specializing in Ear, Nose and Throat medicine (Otolaryngology), Sidney became a fixture in the Pittsburgh medical community. Early in his career, he worked with the team that treated polio-stricken children as Dr. Jonas Salk was developing the polio vaccine. With a thriving private practice for over 50 years, he seemingly treated a large portion of the population of Western Pennsylvania. He taught medicine to medical students, interns, residents and colleagues. He was a Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also published numerous articles and book chapters, and participated in national medical organizations and was widely recognized for his work. Sidney simultaneously pursued a second career as a lay leader in many local and national Jewish communal organizations. Among these, he served as the President or Chairman of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Jewish Family and Community Services, and Rodef Shalom Congregation. In his many roles, he led a wide variety of initiatives, including the establishment of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. Among the many boards on which he served, perhaps his favorite was that of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, for which he traveled the world assisting Jewish communities in need. Over the course of his volunteer career, he garnered numerous honors. Above all else, Sidney was a devoted family man, who deeply loved his wife, four sons and their wives, and then grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his parents, uncles, aunts, sister, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was the bedrock of his family, always supportive and helpful. All will cherish his memory. Services at Rodef Shalom Congregation, 4905 Fifth Avenue, (at Morewood) Shadyside, on Monday, March 25, 2019, at 10 a.m. No visitation prior to services. Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. Shiva Monday, March 25 through Wednesday, March 27, 6-9 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. at The Metropolitan, 537 N. Dear Sylvia, Neil, Richard, Jim and Bill,
Melanie and I were very saddened to learn of cousin Sidney's passing. We're in Florida through the end of April and thus unfortunately were unable to attend Sid's Memorial service.
To me, Sid was the Patriarch of a larger nuclear family. I always admired Sid's class and demeanor, and feel lucky to have been included in your larger family. I will never forget the recent dinner you and Sid hosted for the family at the Fish Market Restaurant.
Sid's memory will always be cherished.
With love and great respect,
Paul and Melanie Leventon

I cherish the memory of our last meeting when I heard stories of Sidney's studies together with my father from high school through medical school, stories of activism in support of Soviet Jewry, and stories of his granddaughter reading from the Torah. I continued to enjoy seeing his picture together with Sylvia on facebook and receiving mazal tovs on the births of my grandchildren. I send my condolences to Sylvia, Jean, Niel, Richie, Jim,and Billy. May his memory be a blessing.

Dr Busis was my doctor for many years. I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a kind and compassionate person. Until I saw a special on Jonas Salk, I never knew he worked on the research. He must have been very humble. What a legacy he leaves behind in his life's work, but especially in his family. Your family will be in my thoughts. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

I worked with Sid Busis for many years in committees of a large national ENT society. Sid was an avid student with a lifelong love of learning and a warm friend. One of those people that you may see only once a year, but always looked forward to seeing. I was touched to learn from his obituary of all his wonderful community service and family life. Godspeed, Sid.

I worked for dr busis in the early 60's as a medical secretary. He was a kind and generous man who I greatly admired. I remember his sons as toddlers. Dr Busis made quite an impression on my life and I thought and talked about him often. I know his father was a pharmacist and I married a pharmacist. Your family is in my prayers and may I say you were very lucky to have him in your life for so many years.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a man I am privileged to to have called a good friend. Sidney Busis was a role model in every respect: a man of great intellect, hard work, accomplishment, faith, devotion to family and friends, and philanthropy. He was a person of principle and decency. My passion for politics and world affairs helped to bring us together. He took a great interest in people, wanting to know more about them, and he treated everyone as a person of value. His sense of humor was priceless. He used it to enlighten me many times on the challenges of aging. What a wonderful, long life, one which shall be a blessing for all eternity. God bless his beloved Sylvia and all of the members of his loving and close-knit family.
