Sidney Shafran Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2010.
DENNIS — Sidney Shafran, 94, of Dennis and formerly of Morristown, N.J., died at his home with his wife by his side on February 16, 2010.

He was born on January 17, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Morristown, N.J., in 1921, with his mother, father, brother Ray and sister Ethel. With the exception of his military service during WWII in the United States Army, he lived in Morristown until 1990, when he moved to Dennis.

Mr. Shafran was a lifelong member of the Workmen's Circle and the Morristown Jewish Community Center, and loved the study of Yiddish culture. He also sang in the choir at the synagogue and in local music groups in Morristown, and had a beautiful baritone voice.

Mr. Shafran is survived by his wife of 62 years, Florence (Seiden) Shafran, a son, Charles Shafran and his wife Robin of New York City, two daughters, Melinda Ewing and her husband John of Norwell, Mass., Judith Angelson and her husband Eric of New York City, five grandchildren, Rachel Steiner and her husband Daniel, Hannah, Sophie, Andrew and Julia, and many nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Cape Cod Synagogue, The Jewish Federation of Cape Cod, The Jewish Book Center in Amherst, Mass., and many other philanthropic organizations.

He was an avid lifelong reader, enjoying mystery and intrigue novels. Rarely did a day pass without his completing at least two crossword puzzles, and even during his last days he amazed everyone around him with his knowledge of vocabulary.

His family will miss his master craftsmanship and his ability to build or fix "anything." He will be remembered as a quiet and gentle man, who was always willing to help or volunteer his services to anyone in need.

A graveside funeral service will be held in Morristown, N.J., on Friday, February 19, and a memorial service at Cape Cod Synagogue is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Mr. Shafran to VNA Hospice, 434 Route 134, Suite G1, South Dennis, MA 02660
